The Brittleness of Bombers and Unrealistic Damage

I started playing War Thunder in 2015, got in a cockpit and never looked back. In each of the five nations available at the time, I always knew that there was two easy ways to get XP for modifications and my next aircraft.

  1. Ground pounding in ARB
  2. Bomber hunting

What do they have in common?

  1. They rarely ever shoot back, and when they do, they are so inaccurate or so lackluster in their damage that you laugh off their damage.
  2. They are weak. A single burst from any gun above a 12.7mm is enough to get a kill.

Now, it’s understandable for a ground emplacement like artillery or AAA to die in a single short burst of autocannons. But bombers? Really? A burst of 20mm fired from an off angle is enough to take off to separate a tail from an aircraft? Or it’s enough to shear and entire wing off? The real life tales of B-17s flying back home missing entire sections of their tails or flying back home on two engines were too unrealistic for Gaijin, huh?

I’m bringing this up because I was flying the Lincoln B Mk II (my beloved) and a SINGLE Yak-3U with FI-T was enough to shoot both my left wing (from the 2nd engine) AND my tail smooth off. Less than 20 rounds of Russian FI-T is enough to cause such catastrophic damage I guess.

Either downgrade the effectiveness of calibers below 30mm ammunition against bombers (because that very obviously should cause immense damage with the drawback of low ammo) or increase the strength of the glue that holds the major parts of the bombers together.

If the entire community sees an entire branch of any vehicle, like bombers, as easy pickings (with an exception to the G8N1), maybe a rework is in order to make them less free XP and SL pinatas. Maybe bring back the tankiness of old bombers where you had to make more than a haphazard effort to kill them.

Barely losing my wingtip (because of the poor damage assessment of the game in relation to mass) lead to me losing control and entering a irrecoverable dive. The damage? A single Yak-3 VK-107 that hit a pot shot on my wingtip from >1km out.

Gaijin, you are actively alienating your playerbase by making at least 1/5 of each nation’s aircraft virtually unplayable. People have complained about the brittleness of bombers for years.

HE shells in general should deal far less damage to planes.

If Gajin simply implemented a system where the larger and heavy a plane is the less damage it takes, that would go along way for Warthunder.

Planes like Zero often had wings and control surfaces ripped off with singular .50cals.

20mm mine shells were dnough to 1-tap a Spitfire’s wing at certain angles.

P-47s could tank singular 30mm mineshell hits to the wing.

Just going off that, you could easily start to extrapolate for all other planes and bullets/shells.
