The AIM-120 'AMRAAM' - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

Maybe, just maybe, the AIM-120D has improved fin aoa? cause that in the video is not 15 degrees of deflection

studies arent used for bug reports so i doubt this unless its some official korean armed forces document

A university science paper is a primary source now? Unless one of the citations contains that figure on what basis are we assuming that it is an official figure?

North or south?

Cause I could see one being a bit biased against the Aim120

None. I don’t believe anyone here assumed it is a primary source.

So i think BRM’s are kinda getting outta hand with their statements

In fairness it is kind of implied that in the context of AIM-120D HOBS does come from third party, rather than the missile being more manoeuvrable:

In addition, the AIM-120D will have increased range and third party targeting which expands the HOBS launch envelope.

Still the reply is written like hobs is only possible with another aircraft, which is plain wrong.(Remind me of the longer motor means less fuel Statements)

It’s not nessecearily a third party, but also includes non radar sensors, such as the RWR or EOTS / IRST

People were referring to the c-5/d which supposedly have improved actuators and pull more aoa which we have video evidence of, you’ve seen it.

It’s true that HOBS isn’t about maneuverability. However, HOBS, in terms of game, for the AIM-120D is the lack of launch angle limitations pylon like on the MICA or R-77-1.

Idk how to check this in game cuz all aircrafts with 120D have fixed aesa with ±70

Gotta love how Gaijin have somehow completely redefined the terms HOBS like it wasn’t an already established term with an established meaning. All to just excuse their poor modeling of a missile in game.

Machine translated:

“This paper presents the research results of the Phase 2 BK21 Project Group, the Korea Aerospace Industries, and the University IT Research Center Support Project of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Korea Information and Communication Technology Industry Promotion Agency”

Gaijin wouldnt take this as a bugreport source if we used it im pretty sure

AIM-120D has completely removed launch limitations. You can check this even with 70± AESA radars by just locking a target and pulling away from them and launching while target is in mem lock.

Radar memory mode, then all previous AMRAAMs have what, 55 degrees seeker gimbal limit? so 70 degrees on US jets already technically can benefit from 360 launch capability.
R-77-1 and MICA have the same 360 launch, former is paired with radar that has actual over the shoulder capability to really benefit from this.

That’s an assumption though, that you made just because a source stated the actuators got replaced, not necessarily that the actuators got improved.

Well obviously the c-5/d’s actuators are capable of turning better than 15 degrees. Again as you’ve clearly seen… If the paper you provided is accurate then its obviously been improved as we can see in the footage. If anything that could be what the “improved maneuverability” is on the c-5 and how they achieved it, improved actuators. Going from 15 degrees of aoa to around 30-40 is a massive change.

Is this from the tornado manual? Cause, I would assume this would be impossible from something like a sea harrier lol

It’s from a report on AMRAAM. Isn’t specific to a platform.

The problem is, even if we could somehow by miracle find a document that states the precise maximum fin AoA of the AIM-120, in his response Smin said that they cannot take in datamined values for correction, as the game coded data isn’t necessarily a 1:1 match with reality, the coding is just supposed to simulate the performance of aerodynamic data that they consider to be true.

Now I happen to believe that whatever aerodynamic data they have is likely inaccurate, but my point is that it seems reporting specific values like the fin AoA is pointless since they are technically set as arbitrarily chosen values in the game files to match a model.

The best shot of the AIM-120 in my opinion is this report that has been on the “accepted” limbo for years. @Smin1080p_WT if you don’t mind, is it possible to have an update on this report, have the devs reviewed it or is it still in some kind of wait list?
