The AIM-120 'AMRAAM' - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

where is the IIR seeker?

Idk. I have just read about it. Maybe at the nose?

if the render is accurate, which it was said to be by USAF, it clearly doesnt have an IIR seeker

there is a planned multi seeker so kinda modular id imagined but not confirmed

the photo i know its low quality but in other photos you can see the small array on the side just behind the nose cone. this image may be a bit better. it may be used as the fuze for a explosive warhead but nothing is really confirmed besides the fact it seems to be some sort of miniature aesa seeker

Directional warheads have been in service with the US since the AIM-54C and AIM-7M, it’s not new or novel technology now

what is the need for side looking arrays on an AAM?

Maybe it would be different design when it comes out or maybe they might just not include IIR seeker

no idea possibly for multi targeting such as if one plane gets knocked out it can redirect to other nearby? or as i said above used for a explosive warhead or for discrimination against decoys and or anti jamming? idk im just going off what i see with my eyes and educated guesses

However dual seeker is also said to be in mica ng so maybe they would have figured something out

2 way DL already can do this

wouldnt a single larger AESA radar be just as good as if not better at ECCM?

MICA NG has seperate ARH and IR versions

thats not how two way DL works to my knowledge. how it works from my understanding is the seeker of the missile is telling the host aircraft what it sees and vice versa. the side seekers would be used for finding a target on its own after seeing its original target got blasted. or for IOG the seeking area would be much larger so if you do break DL its much more likely to find the target due to a bigger scan area.

it has one large seeker in the front? it just has side lobes, think of su57ish

being able to retarget midair is an important part of 2 way DL. GBU-53 has publicly demonstrated this in tests

aim120A’s can retarget (not ingame) but it needs that signal from the host aircraft. im stating the aim260 could do this by itself potentially

Raytheon worked in a missile with 2 seekers, the Stunner has an IIR seeker and an AESA MMW 3D radar, they had to put this funny nose to acomodate well both sensors, dont see how they would fit 2 sensors in AIM-260

Theres any indication that AIM-260’s radar will be AESA?

There is no concrete data on AIM-260 features for the most part, everything is just assumptions. We should wait until more credible sources appear and until then we should worry about AMRAAM in this thread. AMRAAM itself is already a mystery to most, and worthwhile sources are scarce. AIM-260 will be fantasy for decades by comparison.

And how would the main seeker know that the target “got blasted”? Radar signature is still radar signature

PAC-3 MSE entered service in mid 2010s and its also a dual pulse missile.

If you change your aspect your return changes, when an aircraft gets blown up its return becomes much larger and if pieces break off then there are more returns signaling that the target was destroyed.

I dont think the motor section on aim260 will be that large without an aesa seeker. Going from a mech seeker to a aesa one allows much smaller electronics and more soace for warhead and motor.
