Technical Dispute Regarding the Leopard 2A8 Gun Depression Change from −9° to −7.4° and the Applicability of the Official KNDS Brochure

  1. Description of the Issue

Recently, the War Thunder development team changed the maximum gun depression of the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank from −9° to −7.4° following a Bug Report submitted by a player.

The main evidence used to justify this change was the official LEOPARD 2 A8 product brochure published by KNDS. Page 8 of this brochure explicitly states:

Vertical elevation: −7.4° up to +17.4°

This indicates a vertical gun elevation range of −7.4° to +17.4°.

As the manufacturer of the Leopard 2A8, KNDS is a highly authoritative source of technical information.

However, the authenticity of an official document and the applicability of its technical specifications to a particular vehicle configuration are two different matters.

There are differences between the vehicle configuration described in this brochure and the Leopard 2A8 represented in War Thunder.

Of particular importance are the visible differences in the installation of the SPECTUS driver’s observation system between early test vehicles and later Leopard 2A8 vehicles. Furthermore, some technical specifications in the KNDS brochure differ from data subsequently published for production vehicles.

These differences are directly relevant to determining whether the brochure accurately represents the technical configuration of the production Leopard 2A8.

  1. Structural Changes to the SPECTUS Driver’s Observation System

Different Leopard 2 vehicle configurations feature different installation arrangements for the SPECTUS driver’s observation system.

Based on available photographs, structural differences can be observed between early test configurations and later vehicles.

2.1 Early Test Vehicles

On some early test vehicles, the SPECTUS driver’s observation system was installed in a housing that protruded above the front upper surface of the hull.

This structure was located within the potential movement envelope of the main gun when facing forward.

From a mechanical perspective, when the main gun is depressed directly forward, the protruding observation system housing could potentially interfere with the gun or associated structures, thereby limiting the available gun depression.

Therefore, the protruding SPECTUS installation on early vehicles is an important factor that should not be overlooked when analyzing restrictions on forward gun depression.

2.2 Later Leopard 2A8 Vehicles

Photographs of later Leopard 2A8 vehicles show a different installation layout for the driver’s observation equipment.

Compared with the earlier configuration, in which the equipment visibly protruded above the hull surface, the corresponding equipment on later vehicles appears to be more closely integrated into the front hull structure, resulting in a lower overall profile.

A similar low-profile installation arrangement can also be observed on certain Leopard 2A7 vehicles.

This change is mechanically significant.

When equipment that previously protruded above the hull is integrated into the hull structure, the available clearance for the main gun when facing forward may be improved, potentially reducing the possibility of mechanical interference between the equipment and the gun.

Therefore, the differences in the installation of the driver’s observation equipment between early test vehicles and later production vehicles should not be ignored.

2.3 Technical Significance of the Structural Changes

The gun depression of a main battle tank is not determined solely by the mechanical design of the turret and main gun. It may also be affected by equipment mounted on the hull roof, structures at the front of the turret, and limitations imposed by the fire-control system.

For gun depression directly toward the front of the vehicle, the height and installation position of equipment on the upper hull are particularly important.

If protruding equipment on a particular vehicle configuration is located within the downward movement envelope of the main gun, that equipment may become a limiting factor for gun depression.

When the installation arrangement of such equipment changes, the conditions responsible for the original mechanical interference may also change.

Therefore, gun depression limitations on different vehicle configurations should not automatically be considered identical without technical verification.

  1. Differences Between the KNDS Brochure and Technical Specifications of Later Production Vehicles

In addition to differences in the SPECTUS installation, several technical specifications in the KNDS product brochure differ significantly from data subsequently published for the Leopard 2A8.

Page 8 of the official KNDS brochure provides the following specifications:

Technical Specification KNDS Product Brochure
Vehicle weight 61.5–64.3 tonnes
Overall length with gun facing forward 10,968 mm
Hull width 3,774 mm
Height to PERI observation device 3,180 mm
Gun elevation range −7.4° to +17.4°

However, following the public presentation of the first German Leopard 2A8 vehicles in November 2025, specialized military media published another set of technical specifications based on information provided by KNDS:

  • Combat weight: 69.5 tonnes.
  • Overall length with gun facing forward: 11,170 mm.
  • Height to the commander’s panoramic observation device: approximately 3,130 mm.

There are noticeable differences between these two sets of specifications.

The most significant difference concerns vehicle weight.

The KNDS brochure specifies a maximum weight of 64.3 tonnes, whereas the subsequently published combat weight of the production vehicle reaches 69.5 tonnes, a difference of approximately 5.2 tonnes.

Furthermore, the overall vehicle length differs by 202 mm.

The weight difference may be related to different armor packages, active protection systems, or other additional equipment, while the dimensional differences may also result from different measurement standards or vehicle configurations.

Regardless of the exact reasons, these differences demonstrate that:

The technical specifications contained in the KNDS product brochure are not entirely consistent with the data subsequently published for the Leopard 2A8.

This means that the brochure should not automatically be treated as a complete technical specification applicable to all later production Leopard 2A8 vehicles without first verifying the corresponding vehicle configuration.

In particular, when changes have occurred in the vehicle’s structure and equipment layout, certain technical specifications may need to be distinguished according to the specific configuration.

  1. Authority of Official Documentation and Its Technical Applicability

In the technical examination of military equipment, original manufacturer documentation generally carries greater evidentiary value than photographic measurements, personal assumptions, or unofficial sources.

The official KNDS brochure clearly belongs to this category of highly authoritative documentation.

However, the authority of a source does not necessarily mean that every technical specification it contains applies to all configurations and production stages of a particular vehicle model.

Modern main battle tanks frequently undergo multiple design modifications throughout development, testing, finalization, and serial production.

Such modifications may involve:

  • Armor protection packages.
  • Electro-optical observation equipment.
  • Active protection systems.
  • External equipment layout on the hull.
  • Fire-control systems.
  • Vehicle weight and external dimensions.

Different configurations of the same vehicle model may also have different technical specifications.

Therefore, when manufacturer documentation is used to determine the performance of a particular tank, it is necessary not only to verify the source but also to identify the vehicle configuration to which the documentation applies.

The Leopard 2A8 is particularly relevant in this regard.

On the one hand, observable differences exist in the installation of the driver’s observation equipment between early test vehicles and later vehicles.

On the other hand, the technical specifications in the KNDS brochure are not entirely consistent with vehicle data published later in 2025.

These circumstances indicate that not all specifications contained in a single product brochure should automatically be applied to every later production vehicle without considering configuration differences.

  1. Relationship Between Gun Depression and Vehicle Configuration

The maximum gun depression of a main battle tank is a technical parameter influenced by several factors.

In addition to the structure of the main gun and turret, the arrangement of equipment on the front hull may also affect the gun’s movement range in specific directions.

In particular, when the turret is facing directly forward, the relative positions of the main gun and equipment mounted on the hull roof may become important limiting factors.

Therefore, two concepts must be distinguished.

First: The mechanical gun depression capability of the main gun itself.

This parameter is primarily determined by the gun mounting structure, the available internal space within the turret, and the associated mechanical design.

Second: The actual usable gun depression in a specific direction.

This parameter may additionally be affected by equipment mounted on the hull roof, external armor structures, or restrictions imposed by the fire-control system.

These two values are not necessarily identical.

If the installation layout of equipment on the front hull changes, the actual usable gun depression in a particular direction may also change, even if the main gun and turret themselves have not undergone major modifications.

Therefore, the transition from a protruding SPECTUS driver’s observation system installation to a lower-profile integrated arrangement is of clear technical relevance.

This structural difference also demonstrates that, when comparing the gun depression of different Leopard 2A8 vehicles, the specific vehicle configuration must be taken into account rather than relying solely on the model designation.
