Before that I wasn’t sure if this area even had spall liner, thus the confusion.
And they are considered external as they are separated from the crew by protective materials.

TL;DR Fuel tanks are wrapped with spall liner which can only be viewed by hovering on the back part of the UFP.

How can these tanks be external, while they’re inside the main compartment of the tank?
They are separated by spall liners, additionaly the fuel tanks are fire explosion proof.

All fuel tanks have something wrapped around. Doesn’t make them external tanks. Real external fuel tanks are outside the main armor and fighting compartment^^

Autoloader box is 6mm of structural steel in game.
And the 20mm frontal arc plate is seen on T-72B or later including T-90 and is not present on the T-80 or T-72A.
That plate is viewable in the damage model viewer
Look closely, it’s fireproof fabric! It’s not spall liner, it can’t do it.

6mm of “structural steel” is barely enough to stop 155mm artillery fragments at 100m, they should let high energy spall through.
Of course, the arbitrary lower limit for spall generation on HEAT and APFSDS ammo is conveniently beneficial for carousel autoloading tanks.

They’re marked as external both because they use a fire suppressing design IRL and because they’re separated from the crew compartment
They should not be marked as external, Gaijin is just too lazy to model a new type of “fuel tank”.
