T-90M: Modernized Breakthrough

We’re excited to be showing you one of the first brand-new Rank VIII ground vehicles coming to the game in the next major update. Say hello to the utmost modern representative of the T-90 family of MBTs created under the “Breakthrough” modernization program!

T-90M: An MBT for the USSR tree at Rank VIII

Features:

  • New turret design.
  • Frontal Relict ERA protection.
  • Barrel-launched ATGMs.
  • Laser Warning System (LWS).
  • Reduced number of weakspots.
  • Very slow reverse speed.

Vehicle History

The T-90M MBT was developed by the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering under the “Breakthrough” modernization program. During this development the T-90 family of tanks received a new welded turret, featuring Relict ERA, an improved engine and a modern fire control system, which includes a panoramic commander sight and multi-channel for the gunner’s sight. This modernized variant was presented to the general public in 2017, and since 2019 T-90M tanks have begun to enter service with the Russian Federation’s army.

Meet the T-90M!

A fantastic all-new T-90 variant, the T-90M will be added to War Thunder in the next major update at Rank VIII of the USSR’s ground forces tree. The T-90M is at the forefront of the T-90 family of tanks, featuring a new welded turret with built-in modular ERA and a new fire control system. Let’s take a look at what this formidable beast has to offer!

One of the first things you’ll have noticed with the T-90M is that its turret looks slightly different to its predecessors, and that’s correct! This tank features a new welded turret with an extended bustle at the back that holds a selection of the ammunition. Thanks to this addition, some shells that were previously located in the main fighting compartment have been moved into this new isolated area, helping to improve the T-90M’s survivability when penetrated from the front.

A new welded turret also needs some sort of reactive protection and this is exactly what has been added to the T-90M. This tank features Relict ERA scattered across the turret’s side and front as well as the upper front plate, which in turn will help you survive extra hits from ATGMs fired from tanks and helicopters.

Moving onto guns and ammo, which the T-90M inherits from the T-90A: a 125 mm smoothbore cannon that can fire tandem-charge 9M119M1 ATGMs, HEAT-FS, HE and two APFSDS rounds. However, what’s changed the most is the fire control system. This addition means the commander now has a new panoramic sight, the gunner and commander have fantastic thermal sights, plus a very handy laser rangefinder. You may have also noticed that the Shtora-1 active protection system (the red-looking eyes) is absent on the T-90M, however this tank still has a laser warning system, allowing you to react to missile threats in advance.

As for mobility, the T-90M has a new engine with enough additional power to compensate for its increased mass. Despite this increased weight, this tank is as fast and vigorous as you’d come to expect with Russian MBTs, however the burning question you may have is if its reverse speed is any better, and the answer is no. Tragically, it still inherits a measly 4 km/h reverse speed from its predecessors, so be sure to keep this in mind when in battle!

In your matches by Nikolay, Ground Forces Game Designer: My advice here is similar to how I play the T-72 and T-90, which is at medium ranges, use its mobility to your advantage if you’re under fire, while making it difficult to aim at vulnerable weak points. As for short ranges, keep close to your allies because the slow reverse speed and not the best reload speed leave you with no chance if your shot doesn’t penetrate in a 1v1 scenario, or you suddenly run into several opponents.

The intimidating T-90M will be added to the USSR’s ground forces research tree at the all-new Rank VIII in the next major update. Until then, continue to keep an eye out for dev blogs on our website and see you soon!

Shouldnt the T90M in its 2017 version have the 2A82 as maingun?

So it does get heat nets on the turret, why didn’t the Merkavas didn’t get theirs?

Some cope cages would be nice to protect-ish from top down ATGM’s (hellfire/spike)

The only Russian tank to receive the 2A82 is the T-14. There were plans to mount the cannon on older vehicles like the T-80 or T-72, but for whatever reason it was never acted upon.

Probably for the usual reasons. Too expensive. That is common to all nations.

and another Soviet top tier tank that wont actually be killable by anything because its ERA will make it immune to all damage

maybe in the next update we could get the T-80BVM(obr2022) & T-90M(obr2022) as these have increased reverse speed, and anti drone systems and maybe even a modification module for a cope cage.

Something better than T-72B3 mod.2016, but still has painful reverse speed and reload rate. It could be worse than T-80BVM in mobility but its protection is much superior to the latter.

another Strv122+++++ and another 5th or 6th Abrams with another Air-Superiority plane. All for nato boiz. USSR has an only second tank. Hope we ll get some more.

It seems VERY unfair, a lot of hull & turret spots with 2000mm of armour. When a shell does pen there is little to no spall. They somehow made a more biased BVM. The spall liner thats 20mm somehow stops a lot of APFSDS

Something more balanced than the T-80BVM is always welcome

I don’t want to say bias, but i think this is bias

Nothing for note though for Britain, a part from a maybe Gripen C

You mis-spelled “the T-72 family of tanks”

We’ll have to see if things change for the live update but this tank was wrong as hell in terms of it’s damage model in the stream and on the dev server as of now. For starters, it has a spall liner while basically no other tank has them, even if they have been using them for decades. Why is that? Where’s the fairness and balance that didn’t didn’t exist to begin with, for the last years?
The T-80BVM and UK are currently tanking more damage than they should and creating very little spall when they are penetrated. This will do nothing but add to the umbalance of things. Meanwhile tanks like the Challengers and the Leclercs are modelled incorrectly and have barely no protection at all, putting them at an enormous disadvantage that is nothing short of fictional. But you do have dozens of proper bug reports regarding the matter and we see basically no changes at all even after years or, worse, they get denied and dismissed. How are we supposed to do things then?

At the very very least we should have so many top tier tanks revised and reworked in order to be able to be competitive and also, new, better and modern rounds which have been needed for the longest time already. I see no reason for the BVM and such to remain virtually invincible on 90% of it’s frontal aspect when we could, historically and by gameplay parameters, have already implemented rounds capable of delivering way more punishment to those tanks.

It doesn’t have a -15kmh reverse speed though.

Will it have explosive ammo?
