Sukhoi Su-27/30/33/35/37 Flanker series & Su-34 Fullback - History, Design, Performance & Dissection

The thing that aggravates me about this isn’t actually acquiring a lock at that range. I don’t want a hard lock at that range and I don’t intend to shoot at that range.

My radar is detecting targets with TWS. I want to inspect those radar returns and have each one’s location painted onto my HUD so that I can get better situational awareness of what the enemy team is doing. If I’m the only one on my team climbing to contest the high ground, I want to see how many enemies are climbing too. I want to know if I’m flying into a 3 or 4v1 at 80km rather than 60km. I can fully understand not being able to acquire and hold lock at that range by why can’t I simply inspect the returns that my radar is already seeing with TWS? The inability to even move my cursor beyond 60km feels like an arbitrary restriction.

It should be that way and also when radar looks up or there is no clutter notching it should be very very hard. However that’s not how it modelled in the game. I was able to track both a target going cold and hot approximately 40 kilometres away in MPRF which does not make sense at all. Not only that but feels like N001 having a hard time to acquire a target in HPRF Head-on mode even against a hot target without a ground clutter. I have to switch to MPRF in order to track them.

Then they should add probability to dection in the game. Shouldn’t be difficult as implementing proper RCS for the aircraft.

I was a bit surprised since magazines, books, etc. describe su27 as a long range interceptor and it has a radar slightly better than mig29

What is the lifespan on the 27C engines? iirc it wasn’t awfully high

I didn’t realize gaijin had this bug-report portal. It looks like there’s an acknowledged report about the 65km limit for target selection.

I don’t really have a horse in the race of what the radar should or shouldn’t detect in different IRL conditions. I’m just concerned that my radar is succeeding at detecting targets at range, but I’m not permitted to select what my radar is detecting.

to pick up targets at longer distances the HDN modes work better for me than the normal search PD or tws, but yeah the max range of the su27 maybe needs to get fixed, lets wait to see gaijin response about the bug report

Generally I start the match using HDN TWS to try to maintain situational awareness of what the enemy team is doing. Then I swap to standard TWS once I start getting within range for a missile launch.

The radar was pretty underwhelming range wise IRL due to a slew of difficulties, later versions of the radar improve upon it but honestly flanker radars dont really become anything special until the PESA ones

idk, for me bvr still is not worth it, i rather shoot my missiles at close ranges

So…question for everyone here, has anyone made a bug report about the su27 PD radar locking chaff? or the gripen being fully capable of continuing with the afterburner on and evading the r73 by simply spamming flares using the periodic countermeasures

in the case of the gripen, you cant lock him at all (cause the radar keeps locking the chaff) or any other plane that keep spamming chaffs, and you also cant shoot the r73 at him cause even with afterburner on he is able to evade the missile

all PD radars are locking chaff when the target is above them because of the radar changes in the update

is not only above, can be if they are bellow or at the same alt as you, as far as i know you shouldnt lock chaffs with PD radars, you should lose the lock, but not lock the chaffs

it can also be at same alt when background is clear sky or some reason idk the exact specifics but it happens to all PD radars now

what i understand from this source is that, chaff should not be locked by PD radars,

source:

for example, how could you use your gun sight that needs the radar locked at the enemy target so it can calculate how much lead you need to give to hit a shot, if you cant even lock the target?

Chaff can be locked by pulse doppler radars iirc.
Better person to ask about this is @InterFleet

1 year ago one bug report used the same source that i shared here, to say that pd radars shouldnt lock chaff, and it was accepted, what has changed now? Do we have radars that are not really pulse doppler?

im just trying to understand cause it doesnt make any sense, what i understand is that you should lose the lock cause of chaffs, but not really lock the chaffs

and what about the underperforming r73? not being able to hit a target with afterburner on all the time just cause he is using the periodic countermeasures is kinda…bs

Chaff is a bundle of otherwise solid objects that will quickly be lost to the PD due to the sudden loss of airspeed… but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t block the signal. Chaff has been overperforming anyway and I think InterFleet has been instrumental in shaping how radars and chaff work in the game with some of his research / reports. As I said, he is the one to ask.

I’ve spaded the Su-27, and I am fully in awe of how bad it is. The airframe is garbage, can’t win a 1v1 to save its life. Drops speed like no ones business and cant get it back.

Radar is anemic, cant lock, wont stay locked.

Just not going to bother with Russia anymore, when everything else is miles better.

I wonder Su-30 (Su-27PU) armed Air-to-Air Missile like Sukhoi Su-27S & Shenyang J-11 Flanker-B and no change engine but new radar ?
