Sukhoi Su-27/30/33/35/37 Flanker series & Su-34 Fullback - History, Design, Performance & Dissection (Part 1)

I’m looking forward to the Su-34’s radar because I am sick and tired at the sorry excuse of a radar that the flanker has. It feels like an exercise in frustration to even attempt to BVR combat with the R-77’s. You see the target, select it with the targeting cue and spool up the seeker. Oops. That’s not where the target. He was there six or seven seconds ago. But we can’t get a missile lock since he’s not there anymore. Where is he now? I don’t know. Ask again in eight seconds. There are some enemy missiles inbound now. From over there, where we’re scanning. But we don’t see them yet. Maybe in another eight seconds.

Meanwhile I fly planes on another nation and my radars instantly light the target up especially after I narrow down the search pattern so that I’m only tracking the important slice of the sky when I’m trying to track a target…

On that topic did the Su-27 and Su-27SM really not have a variety of different search patterns for their radars? I have a really hard time believing that.

R-77-1 is mostly the same as the R-77, just with a 2 stage motor instead of a 1 stage.

R-77, 6s (23kN)

R-77-1, 2s (34.5kN) + 5s (18.4kN)

Improves its range a decent bit, but after the 7 seconds it still hits the exact same drag wall.

AFAIK, any flanker that can use R-77’s.

@MiG_23M @BBCRF Isn’t Su-34 PESA should have much better scan speed?

This is the crutch of implementation in the game

Don’t know the j10 but the Gripen is definitely B’s it doesn’t lose Speed in Turns
Despite it Being a design feature of delta Wings
So it should lose Speed like all the other Doritos

It’s normal that it loses much less speed than normal deltas, it’s an unstable canard configuration.
But yeah it should lose more speed.

Your screenshot is of an Su-34, a sidegrade to all other CAS in the Soviet tech tree.
Su-34 has no new weapon types added to War Thunder.

So yeah, there’s no one-sided nature being added except Brimstone which is being artificially nerfed.

I’d say its an upgrade. It still has the KH-38s but this time on a platform thats fast and can defend itself.

The su-34 is more of a jack of all traits, it dosn’t have its own thermals, so worse than su-25sm3, but it has more kh-38mt’s. It has less missiles and no HMD and much heavier than the su-27sm.
But what could the su-34M/su-34NVO bring, intigrated thermals/new taregting pod? HMD? bc rn it the regular one would be good but not anything special except from being able to carry 6 kh-38.

“Fast”
At best as-fast as a Tornado.
It weighs 22.5 tons empty, and you need 58% loaded fuel to match the afterburner time of Tornado, and to match the afterburner time of F-4E you need 62% fuel loaded.

Compared to the Su-25

You can use thermals from the kh38 in tv mode tho, for ground RB It might be the best cas

In comparison to Su-25? 34 is absolutely faster

Max zoom:

Sadly Su-25SM3 isn’t available in the new test drive at this time, but here’s LITENING:

If you can see the tanks then its fine.

Having much better AGMs massively outweigh having better zoom.

Cause tanks will out in the open? ;)
AGMs aren’t “much better”, they’re still limited to 20km like everything else, and still IR guided.
Still defeated before launch let alone after launch.

KH-38 > Mavs
Kh-38s are much faster and loft a bit more (less time for interception or interruption)
Kh-38s have 3x the explosive mass (Almost guaranteed kills whereas a mav has like 60-70%)

AGM-65s are so inferior that they kill as many tanks as KH-38s. ;)
It’s a cool fact, and it doesn’t matter; tanks die either way.

But would the su-34M/su-34NVO bring HMD and or thermals?
