Sukhoi Su-27/30/33/35/37 Flanker series & Su-34 Fullback - History, Design, Performance & Dissection (Part 1)

based

There are no mental gymnastics needed, the J-10 for example is better suited than tailed aircraft like Su-27 for supersonic flight as they have less wave drag. They are incapable of supercruise because the bypass ratio is large, closer to ~0.6. The engine cannot create sufficient dry thrust or exhaust velocity to accelerate the aircraft to supersonic speeds.

The English electric lightning has no bypass, it is a conventional turbojet. Exhaust velocity is not slowed by the un-ignited bypass air entering the exhaust stream. No additional thrust is needed to accelerate the exhaust stream to supersonic speeds.

The eurofighters EJ200 is higher bypass ratio than F119, RM12, M88, and the pressure ratio is not similarly increased to account for this. Thus, exhaust velocity is reduced and it will obviously have worse supercruise performance by comparison.

The AL-41 improved the performance of the Su-27 series engines by introducing a variable bypass ratio, improving pressure ratios, temperature limits, overall thrust and performance. The Americans have the F135 which is variable bypass but is a generation ahead in materials technology and design. China is behind with the WS-15 having no variable bypass ratio. To achieve supercruise with the J-20 it requires a 0.25 bypass ratio. This is because China does not have the engine technology needed to handle higher pressure ratios.

None of this is some random opinion, it is extremely well supported by the available evidence. Quit crying about stuff you don’t understand.

Hey, @BBCRF, you said you were a Dev on the Su-30SM mod right?

Can you tell me if any of the later Flanker models get more countermeasures? Specifically Su-30M derivates, since those are my favorites.

Thanks!

The flankers in DCS have double the CMs, but it’s wrong

In theory large CMs can be swapped to smaller ones in a couple of planes, and considering their large CMs are compatible smaller ones too should be compatible, but we never saw them IRL.

FAB-500T is not TV guided, it seems it can drop at higher speed than the normal one.

Appreciate the correction, and I’m still excited!

well, the MiG-23 could do it, but only that the MiG-23 has a large wing sweep that gives less drag, they are similar to missiles in their own way

o, it didn’t appear anymore

This bomb was designed to fly at high speeds and be dropped from the MiG-25

What is the afterburning thrust of the AL-31F on the Su-27 ingame, non-static?
I want to see the channel loss out of curiosity.

Damn, unfortunate.

And seeing as Gaijin hasn’t added any EW equipment I doubt the Su-30SM will get it’s EW Pods

thats got less of a wingsweep than the rafale and typhoon though

It has been well established the performance of the Su-27 is complete fiction in the game. It severely underperforms in regards to the FM and the channel losses are entirely wrong as well. Yet people claim the devs are biased towards Russia.

@Gunjob
The error has not been fixed

And what’s even worse, bug report on Russian was declined because “no additional reliable literature”

Su-34 NVO in files? Or only modification?

It’s current Su-34 iirc

Was it reported?

Ah… I thought we had the first version in the game
