Submarines - WT Discussion

played a bit of cold waters, Is that a kinda realistic depiction for damage or nah?

We had the realistic depiction of damage ingame already during the Battle for the Atlantik event.
If you surfaced, small machine gun fire from AA was deadly, let alone main cannons.

The I-201 was a speed demon for her time. I am happy Gaijin will most likely keep the deck guns operational but if its true a sub update is happening I think Japan might get the strongest submarine tree there is. Germanys U-boats are good but there meant for a different type of job.

One thing that’s cool from reading the wiki so take it with a grain of salt a lot of late war Japanese ships got sonar sets so you should be able to side step the sub issue.

Japan will have something over the US for once at least, but Germany might find a way to bias it’s way to the top.

Something else to discuss is midget subs Germany built a good lot of them. They also built some spicy prototypes using strange and wonderful fuel mixtures that might blow up the sub. Do you think there is use in these little cute subs with there perks in game? Any others you think are cool?

Meet the Molch the pure EV sub extra quiet and eco friendly to boot great for excursions with friends you have been assigned

Some subs I would also like to see

Cargo subs turned cruiser subs

CB-class midget submarine
Mr. almost universal as Germany Italy and USSR used them at one time or another

Some of these little guys would have a lot of utility compared to there bigger sisters as midget subs can get into shallow and tight spots so they might be worth exploring in game. Some issues are not every nation had a robust midget sub program and some where extremely secretive due to them being more black ops oriented or modified in the cold war. But lobbing 2 torpedoes at an enemy from shallow water would be useful

I’d add a couple of clarifiers.

Strongest WWII submarine tree.

Also, only on paper because whilst Japanese subs are very fast and have pretty heavy torpedoes, things like the British amphion class that came out just before the war ended will have more advanced electronics and sonar systems, and potentially smarter torpedoes as well.

So pretty much like those rank 1 torpedo boats? Then current missile ships can destroy any surfaced submarine.

Bravy - 16km range
MPK-33 - 10,3 km
USS Douglas - 14km
USS Charles F. Adams - 14km
Saetta P-494 - 10km
La Combattante - 3,5km (not that bad)

Pretty sure Bravys and Adamses will just camp behind island waiting for submarine to appear.

true

I also want to add the crazy soviet mini sub. Basically a baby boomer sub
losos-class submarine

I think the Type XXI will offer a lot of flexibility for its class though. Many of the features that made German submarines so good won’t be relevant in-game though the I-400 does illustrate it a touch with its high surface speed but rather mediocre submerged speed as opposed to its I-201 sibling.

All I can say is at least both nations have good options for submarines. Unfortunately the British ones, aside from being ugly until the 1950’s, are all decidedly crap. (Least we can beg for HMS N-41 as a squadron)

A 2 men Kaiten?

I hadn’t considered this factor, simply just speed and basic torpedo metrics. I wasn’t really aware of the usage of homing torpedo’s to any significant degree in WW2 really.

But I suppose its something to consider for the British submarine tree. As otherwise we’re pretty out of luck until either the Upholder class or the HMS Dreadnought or HMS Valiant (also interesting that the Nuke subs look so much better and more advanced than the conventional ones of the same period bar Dreadnought)

Its a USSR midget sub built at the tail end of the cold war for black op missions and harbor infiltration. Titanium hull, good max depth, high maneuverability. All in theory though.

They wont be two unbalanced if added in game but they are pure submarines and packed with technology so they would be a good end of line sub for the USSR tree also likely the most modern in game. 1988-1997

Don’t worry you got the K-class submarine. Steam powered best power.

The bigger issue will be anti sub tech which will likely give a new lease on life for the costal trees
example: Chikugo

She can easily eat a U-boat alive from half way over a map add in anti sub helicopter and subs wont be an issue.

Cool

You can go earlier, again, the Amphion class originally had 10 tubes, a radar mast that could be deployed from periscope depth, a night periscope as well. And with refits removing deck guns and external tubes to make them quieter & faster, & then putting a better sonar on them. I think the Amphion also carried the mk21 bidder passive sonar guided torpedo as well.

And then comes the porpoise class which is really britains first postwar submarine. Much deeper diving depths Mark 23 wire guided torps later replaced with Mark 24 tigerfish torpedoes.

And then the Oberon (which was basically a heavily upgraded porpoise) Has a 200 meter test depth, even better electronics, and apparently remarkably quiet according to Wikipedia. These are still diesel electrics & these are introduced in 1960.

Point is that the Amphion class would be pretty competitive, porpoise even more so, and Oberon would probably be like… the second best western submarine in the game behind the barbel class, unless gaijin adds post cold war subs like the type 212 or just adds nuclear subs generally.
