Submarines - WT Discussion

On USS Charles F. Adams when you launch AAM one of the voicelines says “Antisubmarines weapons fire”

Cool!

Now that I think about it, more and more French ships armed with L3 torpedoes are getting added to the game, last one being the Intrépide. Although absolutely dreadful against ships, Those are going to be devastating against subs once they’re added to the game.

Same thing happens when you launch RUR-4 on JDS Isuzu

Antisubmarine weapons launch
Antisubmarine weapons fire
Antisubmarine weapons up (is it up?)

Was it always like this?

One thing I remember about the Sub event they held was that anti air AI did not target the subs. That could be about game play mechanics but I think if subs are added to the game the AA gunners should fire at subs whenever they can. You could get a lucky hit and blow out the periscope or notify there location to someone who can destroy the sub.

Eh. I feel like reenacting the arrow scene in “300” by a.i. wouldn’t be the best experience for subs that barely peek out. Perhaps slower secondaries would be cool though

Yes, for quite some time now.

I never liked the idea of anti-aircraft guns firing automatically, can’t it be manual like in tanks? As a torpedo boat player, I’ve rarely been able to surprise other ships. I prefer the crew to warn me before seeing a sad little boat sinking without realizing it was there. I mean, it seems too op to me that thanks to that I don’t even have to worry about torpedo boats and I think that for submarines it would be devastating because any submarine discovered near the boat would have a hard time escaping

Agreed. Though i also don’t want planes to kinda take over another mode in case gaijin decides to over correct like most of their other changes.

Maybe having a warning/highlight system in game combined with an a.i. weapon selector could work? (Like if you target a plane, the aaa fires at it. Destroyers And up get main and secondary guns. And frigates and below get secondary and aaa. All fired from the players imput)

I think main reason why Gaijin made AA gunners AI controlled is that there is simply too many things to do. Imagine you need to arm the AA gunners and shoot at enemy airplane while you are hammered by enemy ship. You can see this in bombers when you are approaching base but there is also enemy aircraft coming at you (because bomber gunners are useless even with spaded crew).

They need to nerf them. AI gunner, operating VT or Radiofuse is a deadly combo

Honestly, I was fine with them pre-nerf. It’s a bunch of different large guns against a single plane, of course that lone plane would be shot down.

I wouldn’t be against the effectiveness of AI gunners being more dependent on crew skill though tbh.

After playing Tusk Force update against USS Charles F. Adams (or any ship with SAMs) I realized we dont even need ASROC. One hit with RIM-24 (or any other missile) and submarine will be critically damaged and most likely unable to submerge…

What kind of armor does submarines even have? I can imagine the tower is somehow protected but rest of the hull is just strong enough to withstand pressure right?

I’m pretty sure most submarine sails (conning towers) aren’t really protected at all, they’re just smoothed fairings.

Who knows how subs will evade missiles at close range? I think at this point Gaijin’s plan is to add submarines and figure out the balance as they go.

Speaking of which… it sure sounds like the community manager post for the next update will be next week. If we’re going to hear about submarines before the next major update, as BVVD said, then this is almost certainly when it’s going to happen.

Yeah, based on previous years next update should be around the end of October - mid November which is in a month.
(along with Gaijins big anniversary sale)

Most submarines have no armour at all, hence why strafing runs with guns would cause them to stay emergancy surfaced, worst case they would abandon the vessel.

It’s funny that Germany is known for their u boats, but then two of the best subs are going to be Japanese.

I-201 and I-400 class submarines

Basically ni armor

Except some hulls have varying thickness depending on depth requirements

Armor is also not very adapted against the type of threat they mostly face (underwater explosions)

Putting armor would also mean more constraints on flottability and ballasts size

I so want the I-400!!

played a bit of cold waters, Is that a kinda realistic depiction for damage or nah?
