Submarines - WT Discussion

Could also come to France, because my country (Netherlands) got 2 Balao class subs that were modified with that

Oldest sub still in operation is a Guppy (ROC)

They will be nice in game high underwater power for what you get a WW2 hull.

Yeah, I completely agree

I mean tbh i don’t expect a lot of sub on sub engagement if that little collision between Vanguard and Triomphant is to be remembered.

Unless SSNs are forced to go fast to pursue something on the surface, but with their torps, it seems unlikely.

Regarding torps, it’s also likely Mk48, F-21, black shark and others can probably go faster than advertised
(classic " > 50 knots")

those won’t be added before a looong time, maybe more info will come out by the time it happens, who knows

Sub on sub violence was rare there were some events and strategies for subs to hunt each other (some subs were trialed with depth charges) However tech was not there yet and your focus would be to sink the enemy surface fleet. During the Cold War it became possible and the best way to sink a sub today is with another sub.

Those vessels don’t have any objective other than to creep as quitely as possible to shared staging areas and then remain there silently, ICBM ranges and targets for Britain and France are similar, therefore we use shared, mutually patrolled areas which are known to be safe(r) are mutual entry-exit ways.

SSN’s ingame will likely have some sort of objective either to cap points, or raid convoys against ASW assets or High value targets such as aircraft carriers in a ‘modern convoy’ scenario. Remember the more prominent carriers can sprint in excess of 32 knots, with the US ones likely approaching 40 knots and the British ones approaching 35-37 knots that I know of.

That will demand an increased acoustic signature.

Indeed, but I would note that the Spearfish likely has a similar percentage downgrade margin, uses a superior propulsion mix of both Otto II fuel and HAP and was designed specifically to counter the Alfa class, which the British had estimated (overestimated out of a tactical buffer assumption) to be 50knots.

British documents for the tigerfish replacement programme suggested to engage the Alfa class at the ranges desired the British submarines could likely close the distance to a minimum safe distance of ~40km (which is 75% of Spearfish’s range), and then to ensure a kill they would need an attack speed of approximately twice that of the engaged submarines maximum sprint speed. However at 90 knots shallow and 100 knots deep, supercavitation occurs, which the pumpjet even being vectored could not account for.

As a result its likely spearfish aimed and hit the 90 knot margin, and was limited there to ensure there was no risk of supercavitation.

Agreed on spearfish equipped subs and contemporaries.

But in the whole submarine development cycle I could see the earlier SSN’s being added rather fast as the sprint speed would make the whole gameplay cycle a whole lot better.

So we could for Britain see Dreadnought, Valiant and Churchill classes added rather soon, along with their contemporary classes ( I need to do an SSN tree of all nations comparison really at some point to make it obvious what I’m on about.)

Torpedos would be limited to MK.23 Grog, Mk.37 and their equivalents.

This is why its so critically alarming as a Brit in the know that the UK does not have any active nuclear attack submarines at sea currently. Agammemmnon is on sea trials and cannot be considered, and to patrol our areas of interest for SSBN patrols and, if need-be, launch without giving them away you cannot use a P-8 which can be tracked via radar.

As a result an SSN is the best tool unless you have a confident grip on the GI-UK gap (which to be fair the UK has been heavily guarding recently and nothing enters or leaves without them knowing apparently).

But yeah, having nothing to patrol and keep enemy SSN’s away from our launch points and SSBN’s is the most critical national security risk the UK currently faces.

And the only reason its not being rioted over is because its too hard for the general populace to comprehend as a concept.

Subs are sort of the new Battleship there highly complex and needed for a lot of operations even if you don’t see them.

Interestingly concerning Nuke Subs during the oceangate mess Special Military ships and so many sonar pings going off apparently Russian subs came to investigate all the racket (they would not be able to know via the internet due to the nature of subs) They maybe thought some incident happened concerning a western military sub or military ship. Then they all left when it cleared up.

Agreed it’s far more do-able now than back in WW2, but it seems to me like most sub tracking is done with some frigate + heli these days

At least tensions around the conflict you-know-where seem to point in that direction

maybe subs in cold war were also not as silent as today, so easier to track to passive sonar, no pump-jet, and possibly less advanced dampeners ?
It’s also possible the surface tracking is the visible thing and subs are still shadowing each other all the time under the waves, who knows X)

Well if you get into a surface fight you are just a glorified Torpedo Boat at the end of the day.

FYI the K-class submarine had depth charge throwers

The way I would put it from what I was told if you got a modern fleet a friendly sub under you is the best way to keep other subs away.

K-class was a mess but in game if added won’t matter they were steam powered had extreme power for a sub. Was meant to follow the fleet and engage the enemy so the fleet could finish them off sort of like modern tactics instead of how they were really used.

One did engage a u-boat but the torpedo failed

K-class single handedly speed up the development of underwater search and rescue (one sank in shallow water) took lots of effort to save the crew. That’s how bad K-class was

I’m not sure the K class could truly come, wasn’t its dive speed thirty minutes? But it would be a powerful vessels if added.

No idea but 30min is basically one game. However your torpedos are not the most punchy out there.

I feel like the american coastal event after the DCT could be USS England the most famous sub chaser of ww2 after she sank 6 subs in 12 days, this would be a perfect fit since subs are actually coming

Wow, this makes perfect sense. Never thought of it that way. I now think so too, it’d be a neat division.

EC is much longer tho. And I feel laike most players have shifted to that
