Submarines - WT Discussion

If everything is implemented then those with ASROCK launcher probably.
If the sub is surfaced, I think destroyers with missiles will be their main nemesis.

Welp it’s dev blog season, time to perform sketchy rituals for submarines to be added.

No naval devblogs yet, and very usually they haven’t mentioned any naval additions in the community post.

Either there won’t be anything interesting for naval or they’re cooking something.

I have a feeling it’s the first option.

Honestly, if they’re gonna add submarines, this update they’ll show us in the teaser like they did battleships during the new power update. That’s what I believe anyway. They could always give it a dev blog before then.

In terms of WT performance or IRL.

Chikugo is high on the tier list, as are the British Type 12’s.

Type 12s lack standoff armament though.

USS Charles F. Adams is even higher IMO. ASROC, 127mm fast firing guns and missiles.

This was an ASW comparison rather than a comparison of ASW ships at ship-ship combat.

Chikugo has a VDS, CF.A does not. It does have the benefit of ASROC over the Type 12 but it and Chikugo use the same ASROC. It has the most powerful bow sonar of the three but only relevant if a submarine is above the thermocline. Contrarily it’s by far the loudest, louder than Chikugo and MUCH louder than a Type 12. It’s also not specialised for ASW operations, which means it can self-blind it’s bow sonar in rougher sea states due to excessive slamming which isn’t a problem for an AD asset but a big one for an ASW asset, Chikugo on account of being small faces the same hardship.

Type 12 we have ingame is an original batch before subsequent batches were developed so it’s obviously lacking in sensors and armament only survives through being by far the quietest and best adapted hull form of the three.

Overall i’d likely place Chikugo first, and the Adams second, with the Type 12 being virtually undetectable but needing to run down enemy subs and get within 1km to even engage them. Though in war thunder it also has Mk.20 bidder acoustic torpedo’s which would be quite good, despite being awful in-game.

D’Estrées D624 1970s anti submarine refit is a good comparison to the chikugo was the first french ship to get a vds, was totally redone basically and gets cool weapons like a torpedo with a glide kit for far hunting.

a french documentary on Astute construction

Not much new info, but pretty nice images of submarines undergoing construction in different phases.
From what i’ve seen the automatic subtitles are working mostly fine.

Oh and if you want to keep faith in humanity, please ignore the disrespectful comments

And an other doc, this time on triumphant class SSBNs

featuring :

  • 6-7kts on patrol, but max at 25kts
  • max depth >300m but definitely less than 1000m
  • M51 missile apparently having a price tag of 150 millions € a piece
  • Vanguard and Triumphant collision (2009)
  • a fair bit of unneeded boasting around

These Surcouf DDs in their early configuration would be an excellent addition for the French tree around BR 5.0-5.3.

If submarines are added, earning silver coins in naval battles will become more difficult.

Would probably require a ‘wolfpack’ gamemode, like EC but for convoy escort, with perhaps each weekend it alternating between who was escorting, who was sinking vessels etc etc?

And also would give an opportunity for some actually fair representation of ASW and convoy escorting.
