I think the only way for submarines to work in WT would be for them to have their separate game mode, like helicopters did when they launched. Helo EC was in fact working pretty well ald was pretty fun before tjey completely destroyed it by selling premium powercreep KA50. We know the rest. Everyone left, they were forced to go full PVE, etc.
They already have a prototype of a sub mode we’ve been able to play. This one should be the main sub mode. Then, subs would join normal battles the same way helicopters do these days, with all the limitations that’s been mentioned above.
And they aren’t going into this completely blind, Seeing Submarine’s impact on World of Warships, and more importantly WTM, will let them better calibrate their appearance. and they have a much large BR pool to expand to should balancing concerns become an overt issue.
though I do think expanding the Matchmaking BR spread to ~ 1.7 or so and extending things out to 12.0 or so would help reduce some issues and provide space to account for the cruiser gap at 5.0/5.3, and better graduate battleship performace.
Basically completely different games. WTM is a lot more arcadey, right?
I’m sure that submarines are “basically ready” but haven’t showed up yet because Gaijin is trying to make them fun to play. Which is no easy task even if the vehicles are cool.
Assuming a realistic implementation of submarines, they are slow (playerbase loves mobility), they require patience and set up to play properly (playerbase tends to prefer immediate action), and as said above, they are boom or bust - you either executed the set up perfectly and people who die to you will hate you the same way people hate dying to CAS, or you will mess up and die without achieving anything, which is a big disincentive to try again.
Giving them a separate mode also feels incredibly unlikely, given the small size of the naval playerbase.
Just to be clear I’m excited for subs to come to the game, but we should not trivialise the game design challenge. That’s far more important than which types of subs will be added at what BRs etc. If you get the basic foundation sorted you’re set for the rest of their development cycle.
Weren’t the Battle of the Atlantic test games fun for both sides, so why are you saying they aren’t? Didn’t you notice the positive reception from the community? Literally almost no one complained, and those who did complain about simple problems like depth charge management.
Anyway, it’s impossible for ships to have fast gameplay; you can’t expect milk from a chicken.
This is my opinion of the event I think the success was in two areas
The sub system worked people where able to understand them and use the vessels to there proper effect.
The April fools event was well structured (Battle of Atlantic → WW1 → Nuke Thunder was not a grind older April fools events in my thinking there way to much grind for no gain aka SL.
