I posted it somewhere on the forums but it’s a screenshot I took of an EC match at either dawn or dusk, looked cool as fuck.

WHAT THE HELLYANTE! I’ll go check ittt

They started pretty early. Last summer updates were 25 June 2025, 19 June 2024, 14 June 2023 etc.

Found it! Originally posted here.

Surely the lack of devblogs means that we are getting a very big new feature that required more work than planned such as submarines right?

New Submarine in WT Mobile

I understand that WT≠WTM but it’s kinda funny to see the disparity in naval blogs

I love Cold War soviet subs

Pr. 613 would be interesting to play, considering its basically a type xxi but modernized for semi-modern sub warfare

i would love to see interwar period subs all the way up to late ww2 subs, i bet modern or cold war subs are going to be too broken

Modern/cold war DIESEL ELECTRICS will be fine, perhaps very competitive.

It’s the nuclear attack submarines that will be the powerful ones.

If modern submarines eventually come, the ones i see being the most problematic balance wise would probably be SSGNs

Smaller SSNs like this

Would have limited weaponry and classic torpedo tube fired AShMs, so volleys would be limited. Assuming Gaijin fixes multipath and add modern air defense destroyers, you would not really be able to kill serious surface ships with those. Torpedoes would be your main way to kill things, but they are quite slow

This however :

Could be an issue, simply because without mentioning the torps, you already get 24x3 Mach 2-3 AshMs

Now obviously noise is as important as weaponry carried, and diesel electric modern subs have an advantage over nuclear ones (especially soviet ones which were known for being fast, but not particularly silent), but this is Gaijin we are talking about, so X)

Let’s hope we get destroyers with helicopters for some semblance of balance lol!

What about a submarine-only gamemode with AI targets?

Yeah I mean the mechanics are already there with the scout planes tbh, so if modern stuff comes i could totally see it coming

Variable depth sonar could also be dangerous to subs, assuming gaijin models thermoclines

How? They will be massive and half their armament will be irrelevant since they are not gonna allow nukes or ballistic missiles for players. Their stealth might be worse tooo due to how massive they are (depending on the design and submarine) so they will have the same armament as the other non nuclear types. At best they might be faster due to nuclear reactors and stuff but i dont see them being outright better tbh there are some very dangerous modern non nuclear subs out there. Now i know some soviet ones carry tons of anti ship missiles but i think their massive size and worse stealth will be their downfall against other smaller subs and especially surface fleet with asw weapons.

I can see very early on like very early cold war being a little bit of an issue due to some ships and subs from other nations being more tame but the more modern we go the less of a threat nuclear type subs become for war thunder purposes in my opinion

nuclear attack submarines are not the ones carrying the nukes, “nuclear” in this context refers to their propulsion

Modern day submarines are categorized as follows :

  • SSK : Submersible Ship, hunter-Killer, usually diesel-electric
    • for example : Type 212, Kilo, Sōryū
  • SSN : Submersible Ship, Nuclear, also called “nuclear attack submarine”, the ones @Cpt_Duck was talking about
    • for example : Seawolf, Virginia, Astute, Suffren
  • SSGN : Submersible Ship, Guided missiles, Nuclear, this class is a bit particular because its definition is not really set in stone, but they are usually built around a VLS system for cruise missiles, even if now our days most SSNs can already throw AshMs and cruise missiles through the torpedo tubes
    • for example : Project 494A “Oscar”, Ohio reconverted to cruise missile platform
  • SSBN : Submersible Ship, Ballistic missiles, Nuclear, or the ICBM-SLBM slingers you are refering to
    • for example : Ohio, Borei, Triomphant, Vanguard

i could see SSBNs being introduced as the nuke for naval i guess, a bit like the aircraft in ground RB. Sail to a preset location, once you arrive, missiles fly out and game is won.

Woud make more sense than a nuke being dropped on the map like ground RB, since it would mostly be an empty patch of ocean, and it was already the way it worked in the April 2018 event

Assuming Gaijin models this correctly, especially when it concerns soviet boats, you never know…
