Tbh if subs are balanced well, this would be the easiest to add “aircraft carrier” as it would have to use torpedoes if it’s small aircraft pool (3) gets depleted.
I’d place the I400 in the same category as Surcouf, premium, squadron, BP, or gift.
It’s one of those one off cool things with little actual tactical viability.
I would disagree with it having tactical viability. As far as WW2 subs go, they both have relatively high surface speeds and tons of torpedo tubes (I400 has type 93 equivalents, don’t forget). This alone will probably make them pretty competitive (among submarines that is) without even taking into account their aircraft or secondary armaments.
See, I was going off test depth on the grounds that hangar doors and massive turrets surely can’t be good for nicely distributing pressure but no, upon looking it up, they actually have pretty average test depths compared to their peers.
The I-400 had a good depth of around 100m. So it’s quite good.
Hopefully in War Thunder’s interpretation on submarines, things like test depth and dive speed will be meaningful contributors to a vehicle’s performance.
For me, what is exciting about the possibility of submarines in War Thunder is the variety of submarines that would be added. There are of course sub sims out there with much more strategy and realism than War Thunder will offer, but they usually focus on only a few of the most popular vessels. The possibility of seeing, for example, the WW2 Italian or French submarine fleet is a unique proposition to War Thunder.
Yeah, I in general love WT for that, you can find tech which rarely gets represented in other games.
Btw another game’s been recently announced 3 Italian submarines: Foca, Pietro Micca and Calvi.
Just thinking about World of Warships puts me in a bad mood. How could they have done such an absurdly bad job? They did the exact opposite of what people wanted for that type of ship. I hope Gaigin isn’t that incompetent
Don’t be so sure with “competency”. AB Naval mode is a total crap (duck hunting with torpedos). A lot of older players hoped Naval sim mode will be a ‘destroyer command’ style game (manual calculating distance to other ship by range finder). No sim mode till today.
Anyway, “Battle of Atlantic” was quite interesing, dynamic and really, really good loking event. I’m not sure why it is not copied to another seas (ITA vs UK or US vs JAPs)
It was mostly recreation of movie Greyhound.
All right, we got the Community Update.
No mention of submarines. In fact, it says that most vessels added in the upcoming update will be destroyers.
However, here’s something they are adding: torpedo lines.

Obvs this is not confirmation of submarines by any means, but if they are going to add subs this is very essential to add. And those destroyers might be relevant too, who knows?
Looks very neat, and hey, while the majority of new additions will be DD’s, we can stll huff hopium for some “test” subs or something of the like.
Though it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw no submarines this update.
They say the aircraft portion of the update will be “light” and the ground portion doesn’t exactly have a lot called out either… maybe the submarines are just hiding?
At this stage I’d call the odds 50/50.
Might be a longshot here, any guesses on the vessel shown in the background of the torpedo lines, my guess a Japanese cruiser.
But yeah, this might be the working towards submarines as it would be helpful to track torpedoes from such boats.
Been waiting for something like this finally

It does look Japanese. Wild if it’s Kitakami
Looking at it again, it looks like the front of HMS Grafton or Valhalla
that turret platform does look very british
In my main comment on the main post, I thought it was a Japanese cruiser due to the:
• deck colour, & how the wood changes to grey metal at the stern
• superfiring guns with tripod mast forwards an possible funnel
• stern has a crane on it.
I don’t think it’s a British destroyer a Valhalla has a different colour scheme all round an Grafton has red decks not brown iirc.
E, immediately after replying, Although maybe the crane is an artefact my eyes are seeing, it might be Grafton at the stem
Further E, Rowan I think struck gold, definitely the Admiralty V class Destroyer HMS Valhalla.
