Yeah to add on to what has been said here, the machinery of a nuclear submarine is louder than battery power on a diesel-electric submarine (or AIP, or what have you).
However, many nuke boats get very advanced quieting systems like rafted machinery to reduce their noise profile. They are very expensive investments, after all, so nations building them want them to perform well. Whereas many diesel-electric submarines are comparatively much cheaper to build and may not have as advanced systems (though there are plenty of modern conventional or AIP boats that are just as advanced if not more so than nuke boats).
In War Thunder, a nuclear submarine should be portrayed as a bit louder than the equivalent conventional submarine in any given tech tree. However, nuclear submarines usually have access to higher performance (speed and dive depth) and larger torpedo loads, so I think it will all balance out.
how big would the average map be ?. im not well versed in submarines so idk from how far they can engage. obviously we wont get modern subs , so ww2 to mid cold war subs ?.
The range of the US’s Mark 48 torpedo depends on the speed it’s travelling at but at it’s top speed of 55kn (which is 102km/h) the range is 38km. Britain’s spearfish torpedo has a range of 56km (no, wikipedia does not say anything more about the range). Russia’s 533mm UGST has a range of 40km (Co-incidentally, looking for torpedoes on wikipedia is a pain in the ass, I’ve moved to navweaps.com). These are however, rather modern weapons.
Of course, if we look further back then ranges change. Britain’s Bidder Mark 20 S has a range of 11km and the earlier MKVIII** had a range of 6,400 meters. America’s Mark 21 has a range of 5,800 meters, and the USSR’s ET-80 had a range of 4,000 meters.
Subs are going to be a pain in enduring confrontation due to the size of the maps allowing you to sit and wait for your pray and be able to slip out to deeper sea when things get spicy. Anti-sub planes are going to be invaluable at stopping them. Funny enough B-29s and peacemaker bombers had depth charges as munitions so there are options for planes that can fly around with plenty of ammunition.
I would also like to bring up motor torpedo boats as they are fast and some have depth charge capability but would be rare to see. Also flat bottom boats would be immune to subs most devastating weapon the torpedo. Boats like the monitor Parnaíba if added in game would easily beat up a U-boat and IRL she was tasked with that mission because her draft was higher then the depth of the torpedoes. The U.S.A. ran into this issue in the pacific as well because the Japanese used a lot of flat bottom boats for transport but also sub hunting to degrees of usefulness. The cannons on U.S.A. subs where better suited to handling flat bottom boats then torpedoes at risk of air attack. IRL drone boats are making the idea of slapping a 30mm autocannon on a sub a solution to these low value but high risk targets.
In game WW2 subs with cannons might be more survivable because they can take on planes and torpedo boats in a 1v1 but post war subs like the GUPPYS can only run away and hope. Balancing is going to be difficult for the Gaijin but I hope we get lots of gimmicks to play with as its enjoyable to play and see people use strange tactics to win. Example of strange gimmick:
CE2F-X30 piggy back ridding Guppy III submarine, Katsonis
lifting off
Weapons: a limpet mines and possibly mini torpedoes. Some James Bond stuff.
