I don’t get how that Wordpress source managed to get that wrong, even simple one page Su-30SME brochures say it has AL-31FP lmao
they’re the “Best” at BVR (and currently not by a meaningful margin) and are held back massively by the platform they’re on.
So yes, solid is the proper term.
So dont try and dogfight F-4Es in it then…
Use your overwhelming missile loadout to just bury the F-4E with R-73s, R-27ERs, R-27ETs and R-77-1s long before the F-4E ever gets into range. Not that the F-4E is a sensible target to be comparing it with and instead it should be reviewed against other missile trucks at or around the BR like the F-15E, and even then, within a more BVR focused combat profile. Gunfighting is rare

the Su-30SM’s strengths are in longevity. 14 missiles means you can stay in the fight far longer than the other 14.0s
You dont want 1v1 engagements because you just dont have the meaningful advantages in them against your brothers at 14.0

Even then though, R-77s may lack pure range, but make up for it by being more deadly than the Aim-120 in closer ranged fights. As does the R-73s in off-boresight shots and even the R-27ET remains potent when used right. Especially in small arenas like GRB/GSB, the SU-30 is probably one of the most deadly fighter just behind the Rafale.
I know if I play the Typhoon in a GSB match, I will be incredibly weary of facing an Su-30SM which imo, would actually hold almost all the advnatages early game
The R-77-1 has pure range, what it lacks (oddly enough) is the ability to track maneuvering targets at longer ranges relative to the AIM-120s. It’s really bad at tracking targets that aren’t just straight lining.
The R-77-1 is a good missile but it really can’t do the shenanigans the MICA can. TVC allows you to attempt to account for your significantly worse flight performance by comparison, but it can only do so much.
I speak only of ARB and GRB here, because I refuse to play Sim again. Became, exhausting.

what made you laugh? The thing is easily the biggest boat of 14.0 without TVC and TVC only makes it agile for one good turn.
It is also got an absolutely atrocious TWR for 14.0
It has a BVR missile that would be amazing if it wasnt so bad at BVR
TVC makes it agile for every second of the dogfight, “one good turn” is only an argument when the defending aircraft can survive that first turn.
you’re aware that if you use to try to match the dogfighters of 14.0 like the Rafale and F-18… you’re going to lose most if not all your speed.
and all of those 14.0s regain that speed FAR faster than you?
Which is exactly what you want? Would you rather hold speed and try to rate an F-18? Would you rather sit there and do a 2-circle against a Eurofighter?
So why try and fight energy if you hold none and gain very little? Regardless of your speed you hold a quite literal INFINITE amount of nose authority. That’s something they lack, which is exactly why minrad fights need to be forced.

Ok let me explain this better since you’re not getting it.
You are a plane, that due to your bad TWR and by proxy speed. Need to force a very specific engagement to get the best of your advantages. However, you literally are incapable of forcing that engagement on the opponent. The only way to get in to this position you describe, is if the opponent hands it to you on a silver platter.
Every single other 14.0 except the F-18 can dictate when the fight happens and how it happens. You can’t, you need them to give up their advantages.
I will not call a plane good when it relies on the incompetence of the opponent, to gain the advantage.
Pray tell, what specific engagement would you want to force in an Su-30?
…A minrad dogfight.

I feel like your scenario only really exists in a 1 on 1 mentality. There’s furballs and side battles. You can choose where you enter and exit from.
