I mean Mig-29 actually had potantial to become a really good fighter, for example prototype 9.15 model fixed almost every weaknesses that original Mig-29 had.
Problem was Russia didnt have enough budget to fund both company.
Wouldn’t one of the last R-77 variants fit better that role?
MiG would never be able to carry enough fuel and Russia doesnt operate an aerial refueling doctrine like the US/NATO does.

It was designed to be frontline fighter yet it was much better then Mig-29 in almost every area except WVR because of HMD+R-73 combo.
Range difference is too much R-77M (is a 65-70 mile weapon) for fighter sized targets the same as the AIM-120D (publicly released information that is)
The AIM 260, PL-15 and Meteor are all 110 mile + missiles. Then it depends on if Gaijin decide to model battery life for the missiles.
MiG-29 doesn’t even have that advantage anymore considering how badly the R-73 missile platform has aged
9.15 had 2200km service range due to new improved engines and additional fuel tanks.

Which in combat can be burned in 15 minutes even quicker if at low altitude. It’s not enough fuel to loiter on station which is what a frontline cap aircraft needs. Not my opinion well documented the thirsty engines hampered the MiG 29
