Introduction
The Strv m/42 TV was an attempt to redeem the initial production run of the Strv m/42. The Strv m/42 TM used a pair of Scania-Vabis typ 603/1 engines paired with an electromagnetic gearbox from the German firm Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, which supplied the ZF typ 6 EV 75 electromagnetic transmission designed to be used in railbuses. As it turns out, putting a transmission designed for a significantly lighter vehicle turns out to be very problematic in a 22,5 ton tank. The transmission was plagued with issues, and something needed to be done. It was decided that the 100 Strv m/42 TMs would get new transmissions; 30 of the tanks would become Strv m/42 TH, and the remaining 70 tanks would be designated Strv m/42 TV. These 70 tanks had their electromagnetic transmissions removed and replaced with a mechanical Volvo typ VL 420. These tanks would serve with the army up until 1957, when they were taken out of service and rebuilt into the Strv 74 V. We currently only have the Strv m/42 EH in-game; therefore, there are three other subvariants currently not in-game.
History
At the end of the 1930’s, Sweden’s army realised that a new, heavier tank would be needed, and this became even more apparent when WW2 started. At that point, the army had just gotten their Strv m/38 and m/39 tanks built up on the Landsverk L-60S. Landsverk had previously also managed to sell the L-60 to the Hungarians, who adopted it as Toldi and used it in a handful of variants. Landsverk would once again in 1939 try to sell a tank to the Hungarians, this being what they called the Lago. First, it was offered with a 37mm, but it was rejected in favor of a Hungarian 47mm. This version would be called the Lago H. Ultimately, no purchase was made by the Hungarians, and Landsverk was left with a tank that was essentially just an upscaled L-60. Meanwhile, the Swedish army was trying to figure out if this new heavier tank should be domestic or imported, but it was quickly realised that importing tanks would become very hard. It was decided to check in with Landsverk to see what they had to offer, and they offered the Lago straight away, but it was rejected because it had the same armament as the Strv m/38 and m/39 already in use. Landsverk would try again with a 57mm cannon, but this would also be rejected as the cannon would extend beyond the dimensions of the chassis. It was decided to design a new three-manned turret and, meanwhile, also lengthen and widen the chassis just a bit to accommodate this new turret. The armament was decided to be the Bofors 7,5 cm L/31 cannon. A batch of 100 tanks was ordered in 1942 and would become the Lago II, with delivery being taken in 1943.
This initial batch featured a pair of Scania-Vabis typ L603/1 engines and a Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen ZF typ 6 EV 75 transmission developed for use in railbuses. This decision would plague the tanks until they had their transmission changed in 1948. The following issues were noted with the transmission: an early sign of the transmission going bad was a smell of burnt insulation, and lots of maintenance was needed, including replacement of parts, repairs, and adjustments. On top of that, spare parts were no easy task to acquire. The transmission was also very finicky when it came to turning, and turning too hard at too low a speed caused the transmission to strain and wear out more quickly. Burnt brakes were very common, and hard turns at under half the tanks topspeed was not recommended. And since the tank was also longer than wide, it also caused the tanks to be hard to turn at low speeds, and this would be a drawback of all variants of the tanks. Even with this, crews noted the tanks as easy to drive since the transmission was automatic, and thus the tanks lacked a clutch pedal. Finally, in 1947, it was decided to replace the transmissions in the 100 Strv m/42 TM tanks; 30 of them would be rebuilt into Strv m/42 TH, and the remaining 70 were rebuilt into the Strv m/42 TV. The TV model removed the ZF Typ 6 EV 75 transmission, just like the TMs converted to TH, but unlike the TH model, which used a hydromechanical transmission connected to one planetary gearbox, this used one mechanical planetary Volvo Typ VL 420 transmission. Work for the conversion would not be carried out until 1948, even though the decicion was for it was made in 1947.
Strv m/42 TV No. 528
There is no visual exterior difference between the different Strv m/42 models. The only way to know what model they are from the outside is by their registration number and the year of the photo.
With this, all the transmission issues had been addressed on the initial batch of the Strv m/42, and the tanks would serve up until 1957. Some of the Strv m/42 TVs would receive a detachable ring mount for the ksp m/36, which the tanks came with four of. One of them could be removed, and this ring mount could then be mounted with that machine gun to the commander’s hatch. After they were taken out of service, these tanks would be rebuilt into the Strv 74 V instead and serve in the Swedish military a few additional decades.
