Commander Traverse Overide (??On the way??)
Strv 74 Lacks a Alternate Power Unit (APU)
Its a Volkswagen 122 (gasoline) producing 25hk at 3000 rpm consuming 5L out of its 34L Fuel tank.
It sits at the rear of the Turret. The commander has the APU control station behind him.
Would make shooting the rear of the Strv 74’s Turret funny and have it get stopped by the: Armour, APU, Secondary metal barrier between the APU and Fighting compartment.)
Now for the second thing.
The Strv 74 was a Swedish modernization project intended to extend the service life of the Strv m/42 through improved firepower and updated equipment.
During its development, Sweden made extensive use of components and equipment from its newly acquired Centurion tanks (Strv 81). This included several optical instruments and sighting systems, such as indirect-fire sights, as well as equipment for the commander and gunner.
Commander and Gunner Positions
The turret incorporated electrical traverse controls for both the gunner and commander.
- Gunner: Operated the primary electrical turret traverse controls and had control over aiming and firing the main gun.
- Commander: Had a separate set of electrical traverse controls, allowing them to override the gunner and independently rotate the turret when necessary.
- Commander’s binocular sight: The commander was also equipped with a rotatable binocular observation sight, allowing them to observe the surrounding battlefield.
Commander’s Controls
Although the commander could override the gunner and electrically traverse the turret, they could not fire the main gun or control its vertical elevation. Their control was limited to horizontal turret rotation (traverse).
The highlighted components in the reference image indicate:
- The gunner’s electrical turret traverse controls. (From a Centurion)
- The commander’s electrical turret traverse controls. (From a Centurion)
- The commander’s rotatable binocular observation sight. (From a Centurion Called “Binocular Parascopic Armoured Fighting Vehicle N4 Mk1”)
I am unsure if Traverse-Only commander overide is a thing in war thunder. But worth the mention.
