You`ll get there. Also it might help to be constantly aware of exactly what planes are in your team.
The rest is up to common sense and practice.
Dude… I am… I have almost 500 sim matches, I’m not a fresh recruit to it.
Also, didn’t know this, but on pc you can zoom out in the cockpit… which gives a higher Fov which is bs we can’t do it on controller… another advantage I cannot use :)))))) thx gaijoon
I flew my A-10C for the first time today, got 3 kills as it was stock, didn’t die, and, didn’t get a TK because I didn’t have to rely on team mates to respond! I love the HMD IFF
Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m a console player like OP, but unless it’s a plane with a very distinctive shape, like an F-117, it’s hard to spot the details.
You can use dedutive reasoning, but it can lead you down the wrong path. The guy I shot down on my Jaguar was flying the same profile as an enemy attacker RTBing. The A-10 that killed me in my other example was actually RTBing, while a Frogfoot was in the same rough area.
Now, here’s the crux of the issue: People are using game mechanics like the Follow Me command in a way not originally intended by the game because the game doesn’t offer the appropriate tools. I don’t know if Sim spotting mechanics have been change in the 10 years I’ve been playing the game, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t. Teamkilling is rare in props and early jets as the friendly marker spotting range is more than enough for gun only fights, the system was not designed for 3-5km IR missile shots. So instead of all this back and forth about who’s to blame for teamkilling, simply why not give an unambiguous ad hoc radio command to ID yourself or an “I’m about to fire a missile in this area, so watch out”? The game mechanics to mark coordinates and display icons on the map exist already, the only real work for Gaijin would be recording voice lines and I wouldn’t care if it’s text only.
They have a command to radio ally location in helicopter controls, just add it to all sim, and then it’s an easy win.
I don’t see why some of the stubborn (not you) people protest a good tool to have, instead they dislike change.
I’ve always thought they should reflect the general effect of friendly ground spotters / central command by making all friendlies show up as dots on the map (only on the map) when they are in friendly sectors, behind the contact line.
It would help reduce friendly fire, more easily identify enemies in your airspace, while making a notable increase in danger/need to pay attention when you enter enemy airspace.
I feel you there. When I do play in VR, the picture quality is abhorrent. Usually, I’m still able to make out some defining features – number of engines, wing shape, overall size. Usually that’s enough for me to figure out what it is, on top of the fact that I’ve been playing sim long enough to have a general idea of where people are/what people fly based on map alone (Denmark is full of base bombers who stick either east or west based on the team, Tunisia is full of CAS planes on points/near AI).
Also true. I rely on a gut feeling if I’m not sure, and worst case scenario, I can go cold (if I have a radar) and get closer for either a potential gun kill or an avoided TK. I don’t think I’ve run into a single TK if I had any doubts, but that can come down to luck partially.
Agreed – one of my fav BRs to play is early jets. Identification is ridiculously easy, even at moderate range – coming from someone who plays against Germany often.
This is where the uncertainty comes in. With early missiles/radars without IFF, you have to be super careful. Being skilled with guns will always be immensely rewarding.
I feel like this is kind of a stretch. Imagine chat being flooded by “Firing missile!” messages. Would just give me an excuse to further mute my already quiet radio messages.
I’m going off of personal experience here. I have probably less than 10 TKs to my name in all of my sim experience while also getting aces more often than not. I personally ignore most of the “Follow me!” messages, if not all. Scroll up to see my strategies.
If something were to be added, it could be something similar to the target identification in GSB, but it should have limited range and take time to use. If you want easy instant IDs, play ARB.
But 11.0+ isn’t really early, and between the bugs and what not makes it difficult.
Add in the fact some aircraft cannot turn fight / gun run with ease
But 11.0+ isn’t really early
Most 11.0+ planes without IFF have some other skill going for them – turn rate, speed, energy retention, loadout, etc.
Add in the fact some aircraft cannot turn fight / gun run with ease
Pretty much 11.0+ can do at least 1 of these if they don’t have IFF. The F-111F is immensely fast with 2000 rounds of 20mm, and the A-10A has lots of defense and great slow-fight performance. Yeah, it helps to have comms with the team, but if someone’s unresponsive, I won’t blind-fire a missile at them. Plenty can be done to avoid TKs.
I’m going to refer back to my original point that I have very few TKs to my name in sim with over 1 year of experience. I play at all BRs, especially ones where there is no radar/IFF.
My main strategy is as follows:
- Be aware of what your teammates are flying. I check at the start of every match.
- Check the leaderboard to see what the other team is generally doing. This helps to get an idea of where to look.
- Pay attention to bombing targets. A base that suddenly disappears/takes damage is always a telltale sign of an enemy.
- Checking killfeed – ground or air, player or AI – will help you get an idea of where people are. If a plane gets shot down, look around for a fireball in the sky.
- Check capture points. Pretty much always a telltale sign.
- Stay low. Everything is much more visible against the sky.
- Know silhouettes, or at the very least, be able to compare number of engines/shape/size to your teammates. I’m really bad at knowing exact planes off of silhouettes, but luckily, you can see your entire team’s silhouettes by pressing tab.
- Trust your gut. If you have even a shadow of a doubt, don’t fire. You’ll still have just about every advantage if you stay behind them when you go to investigate.
None of these require comms – not to say that they don’t help. Of course, before I chase someone down, I’ll mark them, but I’ll go for a gun run instead if they don’t respond. Point being, comms aren’t the be-all-end-all of sim. At the end of the day, pretty much all teamkills are the fault of the one who fired.
Isnt sim mode about recognizing friendly or foe visually? I wonder why we even have friendly indicator when close enough. Something is wrong about that…
No…?
Simulator = as close to real life as possible.
Hence the word “simulator”
so indicators should be deleted.
Your right, planes with transponders and maps should automatically be highlighted.
Radio calls should be added, etc.
It’s simplicity, but it’s sim.
Or you know, devs could add AWACS to high-tier game play or even ground-based
god forbid bvvd work on anything the player base wants “because we are dumb and we don’t need or want change”, just more premium tanks and planes at top tier and smaller single lane maps
Well the old stubborn players who despise change, don’t help changes occurring
Edit:
They don’t realize there is only an benefit here, and not a downside
I doubt that Gaijin is just driving away the old player base and wants to draw in fresh blood to milk with shiny new toys 80% of my friends have completely abandoned the game. That BVVD interview on YouTube was the last straw for me. I’m just going to grind the Mig-25 and call it. Infantry does not interest me in the slightest, since I can play Arma if I want to.
Edit: didn’t even grind the Mig 25 game is just boring now
Damn right
Or you know, devs could add AWACS to high-tier game play or even ground-based
As I said.
I remember in the old Falcon 4 one had the option to call AWACS to confirm if a locked target was friendly or not, which simulated the often iffy reliability of IFF equipment.
Well, Sim in WT is still sadly underdevelopped with a lot of quite basic functions missing… = /
They have a command to radio ally location in helicopter controls, just add it to all sim, and then it’s an easy win.
The button that hasn’t worked for four years now?
Yeah… that’ll work
/s
Another bugggg
Another been around for years bug.
Couldn’t fire yet I hit the button many times
Edit:
I played earlier and I found myself in a split lobby and I was in there by myself and supposedly 2 blueberries, but it quit out because it didnt register there was enemies even though the match had 2 in there
It matches the IRL struggles I think.
The thing is that players don ‘t base themselves on the aircraft ricognition. Myself I sometimes prefer to get less than a kilometer away if I’ m not sure about a teamate position. At those distances the username and all the info are visible just as air RB.
I would love to play F4 vs Mig-21 BR, but the bad matchmaking that make as an example Germany with the USA, the aircraft shape won’t help. So historical matchmaking (not about the years of the planes but about the uses of the planes) would be useful.
Same thing for all the East-Germany air. Complicated ERA makes it more complicated.
So I play more with the good radars that has decent FOE, but I don’t like the ultra-modern Fox3’s so I’ m playing 13.0 or 12.7 with are for me the best battle rating for the sim in WT.
