Statshark's Live Game Viewer is really bad for the game's health

A few years ago, a similar site introduced this feature for World of Tanks and turned the game incredibly toxic.

Being able to see who is a “good” and “bad” player on your team based on the statistics of a third party site made players very hostile towards each other with constant harassment of “bad” players or even if a “good” player had a bad game.

You may say now, anyone that harasses other players can be punished by the Game Masters but why would they have to do extra work to deal with harassment from a feature that really does no good to the game in the first place?

I haven’t personally used this new version of the tracker myself but how does this third party app know in real-time what team you are on and what vehicles your teammates use? Doesn’t this mean that it also knows what vehicles the players on the enemy team have? This can’t possibly be legal as it could easily be abused by teams in the competitive modes to see the full roster of vehicles in the opposing team without having to modify their own game client making it extremely difficult to find out if they are cheating or not.

Gaijin should absorb the Statshark ecosystem and integrate it on its main game website, plus sending a C&D to the people behind it.

It’s an awesome tool, but the core philosophy behind it is indeed questionable.

Since it relies on OCR on localhost, anyone who calls their account “Player” the way streamers do should be undetectable, so people could have options here. Someone can always test that ofc.

Do you have any way to confirm this?

From what I know, you shouldn’t be able to access localhost from another website

Also on all documentation for war thunder’s localhost that I have found, I have found no mention of being able to get the full playerlist and vehicle list. You can get their map position, see the battle log, see your own aircraft’s FM properties, etc but never have I seen anything about other players

The what? Are you admitting to using a cheat to see what vehicles enemies have in squadron battles?

lol it looks like someone exposed a "competitive" squadron secret and now they are trying to hide it

Do you have any proof of this?

Basically, if you express your opinion on any topic on any platform, you are automatically analyzed by the defenders or attackers of that topic, and they will use the statistics from that site to discredit you.

It’s really disgusting, no matter if 80% of the community thinks the same as you! If you are a casual player or have a low win rate, your opinion on any topic is completely discredited.

Disgusting, totally disgusting.

statshark shouldnt even exist, ignoring the very questionable devs behind it.

Gaijin should have a website doing what statshark does themselves

Well,it tracks past game data and shows comp from that. So basically next game you face the same team, you kinda know what comp they had.

Just dont be trash at game while having bad opinion, then you might get backed up. Like when 0.2 K/D people with 30% WR try to suggest changes. They shouldnt be able to make suggestions about gameplay until they get positive K/D and above 50% WR cause they dont understand how the game works.

So the claim here (I don’t know if I 100% believe it just yet) is that they are visualizing information that is available to players as part of the (permitted) localhost feed, then visualizing it using OCR. From the Discord, Jan 2:

Spoiler

###

1. Shark Client

Starting now, all patrons can go to StatShark - See All Player, Missile, and Vehicle Statistics and download the Shark Client application. So, what can it do?

### Live Game Viewer

Basically the same old live game viewer that was on the site a few months ago, this time as a built-in Windows application.

### Session Viewer

You can group up the games you played however you’d like, and you will instantly get the summed-up stats for the given session.

### Streamer Overlay

If you stream, your current session stats will update in real-time after getting a kill! How does it work? Why does it need to be an application? We use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) alongside available localhost endpoints to find the player names and map them to each given team, which is why it needs to run locally and can’t be on the website :(

So if it is OCR-based that could potentially be dodgeable if everyone anonymizes. (If that doesn’t work… well, that’d be good evidence this is just the old web-based version repurposed as an app).

Others have raised good questions about whether this heightened access only with a paid sub fee is consistent with ToS, and if player’s tokens who have opted in are still secure. Gaijin only ever gives out one secure token per account, if that is accessible to devs through an app you allow on your PC you’d potentially be sharing total account control with them. So I agree there’s some questions here. (I think another fair question would be how much Pluspy had to do with this, given certain things that went on in social media last year.)

After seeing how people farm kd/winrates with op vehicles like bmpt, ldircm helis, t58, etc.

I dont give a f- about skill websites.

This looks like it is just the website application but with an overlay

The 1% shouldn’t dictate the 99%, it’s that simple.
If someone is trying to change the game and they are a god-awful player, it probably means they do not understand the game mechanics enough to have a valid opinion. But even a broken clock can be right twice a day. So I still give the worst some listen.

People can easily look at your stats even without Statshark.

The other side of the coin is that its easy to find out trolls and people who have no clue what they are talking about.

You can claim to be the best Tiger II player in the world and only your playstyle is the only valid one, but if your stats show you have 0.2 KD in both Tiger IIs, its safe to say youre spouting nonsense.

Also, well written argument is judged on its own merit and rarely provokes people into “statchecking”.

That literally sounds like a type of forced segregation by toxic communities.

Idk. It is what it is. You could always see everyones K/D in games for the longest time. its only been a recent trend to hide all of this. Who cares if someone wants to be toxic. Its a game. Just ignore them
