Sovetsky Soyuz is blatantly Overpowered

I finished the Italian tree and got the Roma. Play 1 game and sunk after 2 minute by a Soyuz salvo. Stop playing it. Now I’m finishing the British naval tree only to GET some iconic vessels (hood, warspite and Prince of wales) knowing that I will never playing them because there is no point in it. It’s very sad: I accepted the new aiming method (although I prefer the old one) but I definitely stop playing any BR above 7.0.

Never thought i’d live the day someone would claim Soyuz is not a fantasy ship, let alone being balanced as is

The ship itself was laid down but it wouldn’t have performed nearly as well in real life as it does warthunder.

For context: had she have been completed (let’s say 1945 for ease of argument), Pr23 Sovetsky Soyuz would have utilized inferior armor protection. This would equate to roughly a 15% reduction in armor effectiveness. Give or take a few % as the plates would almost certainly be two plates half the thickness layered together. Although this is guessing.

Her turning radius would be absolutely abysmal compared to other ships in her weight class. IE Iowa at 720m, Yamato at 640m. Soyuz would be 940m+ due to construction and rudder placement.

As for the guns… Dispersion was horrid based on testing but it was stated powder bags of poor quality were used. The guns were used as point defense in Leningrad where it was mentioned they performed admirably.

I could dig further but given Pr23 Sovetsky Soyuz isn’t exactly ‘publicly available information’, there probably isn’t much that I could find legally.

I know that sometimes maybe weird stuff happens in Naval but how the hell does this happen?
A Vanguard Shell at an angle of like 50+° impact at 15km somehow penning the armor belt and going straight into the magazine seems like quite the meme.

Add to that as a funny bonus things like this (2.2 tons of tnt just being absorbed by omega gigachad armorbelt that is Alaska.)

Yes, it makes sense given Japan actually built 2 Yamatos and converted one to a carrier while Russia was nowhere near completing the Sovetsky Soyuz.

The difference being, Japan was a very industrialised country, with a longstanding, entrenched naval shipbuilding industry that had decades of experience building ships of a similar scale and design to the Yamato.

Conversely, the Soviets were still coming out of a crash industrialisation of the 20’s and early 30’s, with severely limited naval infrastructure, and a general lack of the backbone industries that make military ship building possible (Armour plate manufacturers, gun/turret design, etc).

What few large ships the Soviets and preceding Russian Empire possessed largely used foreign designs (Or were just straight up bought from other countries). They were only just starting to come up with their own designs right before WW1, and even then the Imperatritsa Mariya class and the Imperator Nikolai I were largely just riffs on the Gangut class, which was a German design that the Soviets built with the help of a British firm.

The already lacking Russian shipbuilding infrastructure was then left to languish during the revolution, up until Stalin woke up one day in the early 1930s and decided that he wanted a massive, ocean going navy. It is, as it turns out, rather difficult to crash build all of the infrastructure required to build such a fleet, while also crash building an entire new industrial base, and crash building a modern army, and crash building a modern air force.

I mean, one of the class literally had to be scrapped on the stocks after they figured out they’d somehow used rivets that weren’t up to spec, rendering the entire hull a write-off. Can you come up with any remotely similar circumstances to that in a navy fielding any kind of battleship, let alone one more powerful than any known at the time?

Also worth considering the story of the Kirovs. They were the first substantial warships built in Russia after the revolution, and yet despite the overall design being adapted from Italian plans, they still had major problems.

The Soviet designers promised that they would be able to fit triple 180mm guns onto the small Raimondo Montecuccoli class hulls without affecting the weight. This turned out to be a lie, as they completed 7% overweight, causing them to miss their target speed.

Worse still, the sacrifices made to fit those triple 180mm turrets onto such a small hull also turned out to be crippling. They were so cramped that they could only manage 1/3rd of their designed RoF (2 rpm instead of 6), and with the barrels so close together, the blast from the neighbouring guns resulted in some truly appalling dispersion. Also, due to the very high velocity shells, they had a pretty abysmal barrel life, and the blast effects were so severe (And the welding so shoddy) that some ships had to limit their turrets to only fire between certain angles, to prevent the guns from breaking the ship apart. Of course, none of this is modelled in game either. Huh.

To sum up, this does not sound like a nation that could simultaneously crash build the largest and most powerful battleships known to exist at the time.

The Kirov project was an absolute mess of constant demands and goalpost moving.

However, Russia did make the 40.6cms. although as far as I know, they seem to be single mount land emplacements at Leningrad. Two guns short of the triples they were supposed to be.

They certainly did build it and test it, and I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s one thing to do that on land, and another thing to mount it in a turret, on a warship, and make it work as intended, even merely make it operational.

Personally, I always come back to the same example to illustrate why unfinished ships are such a dangerous thing to add in the game.

The Dunkerque class guns were supposed to be able to reach 3 rpm, and were designed as intended for that. However, once installed in the turret, they realized the shell supply arrangements did not permit a fast enough reload to take advantage of that rate of fire.

That’s the kind of thing you can only know once you’ve finished your ship. And I don’t think it’s controversial to say that French naval engineering was more advanced and experienced than the Soviet’s at the time.
