Yeah its little annoying sometimes. Time to time can get wrong where is and mostly how far away is the enemy.

It feels like it got significantly worse recently. I have tanks driving up full speed behind or to my flanks, making zero noise. Engines are dead quiet, while guns, and especially planes are extremely loud. And this is with everything except engine noises turned all way down…

If you’re moving in your own tank you shouldn’t hear another tank as you wouldn’t in reality. Sound settings should also be matched to each other to avoid cheating/eardar. If you move your own engine sounds down then external engine sounds should also go down, or lock the game sound altogether.
The sound in War Thunder is already broken because you can hear too much (I’m speaking from a Sim perspective where it rears its ugly head the most). As of right now even with a closed cockpit I can hear SPAA’s firing at me from thousands of feet above. I can hear gunfire from enemy aircraft unfairly potentially robbing someone of a kill, some scumbags fly jets with open cockpits and can literally hear missiles launched their way from miles out and can hear jets approaching whilst they’re flying at mach 1.
In tanks we can already hear enemy tanks from entire grid blocks away whilst we’re thundering along.
The ultimate fix would be to lock the sound controls and have a system in place that mutes external sounds when you’re moving but allow you to hear vehicles once you’ve stopped/switched your engine off.

The seperate engine volume should be removed. From a realistic perspective you shouldn’t hear anything besides of you own engine. How ever it’s really game breaking especialy in CQC, because most light tanks have to rely on ambushes on city maps and with option to hear other engines from like 4-5 block away, any attempt of an ambush is negated directly.

This is what i use and i love it
The tank engine sound are almost unhear able unlike plane or even machine gunner which blast sound /some times the crew member voice lag and start repeating the same sentence several times
