Leaving personal opinions aside(lol) I probably should have noted but this slide DOES NOT make conclusions on performance as some people have been machine translating. When it says “strong” and “stronger” this is a screw-up on Google’s end the actual meaning is 1-5.9l（较强）=4，r77（强）=5. I don’t want anyone to mistakenly come to conclusions based on a single slide and I have seen some do so.
In 9L’s case China would have been well aware of it’s performance based on the trials that selected Python 3 as 9L was the key competitor on offer in final selections.

Theres a reason SD-10 and later PL-12 follow AMRAAMS design philosophy so closely. In a perfect world where subsonic drag isn’t a thing and perfect launch conditions exist the grid fin design has it’s advantages but this is not a perfect world lol.
