Hello everyone, and welcome to this new suggestion.

Today, I am presenting a new French training aircraft: the TB30 Epsilon No.01.

During the 1970s, the French Air Force began looking for a modern trainer to gradually replace its aging Fouga CM.170 Magister fleet. The goal was to develop a reliable and economical aircraft capable of providing basic and advanced flight training to future French military pilots before they moved on to more advanced jet trainers and combat aircraft. To meet this requirement, the Air Force turned to SOCATA, a company already well known for its range of light training and utility aircraft.

SOCATA based its proposal on the TB10 Tobago, an aircraft already under development for the civilian market. The resulting prototype was significantly modified to meet military requirements and was presented to the French Air Force in 1979. Although the aircraft demonstrated promising characteristics, several aspects of the design still needed improvement. After undergoing a series of modifications, the prototype made its first flight in its revised configuration in late 1980.

The aircraft I am proposing today is TB30 No. 01, the original prototype and development aircraft of the Epsilon program. Unlike the production aircraft that followed, this particular Epsilon was used extensively as a demonstrator and testbed. It was fitted with various experimental equipment and, most importantly, was used to evaluate different weapons and armament configurations. This makes it particularly interesting, as the French production Epsilons were delivered primarily as unarmed trainers.

Following several years of testing and modifications, SOCATA and the French Air Force eventually agreed on the definitive configuration of the TB30 Epsilon. The final aircraft differed from the original prototype in several ways, including a cockpit moved slightly further aft, a larger vertical stabilizer, and modified wings designed to improve the aircraft’s stability and handling characteristics.

France initially ordered 30 aircraft, but the order was eventually increased to 150 examples. Deliveries began in 1984, and the Epsilon became an important part of the French military training system. However, unlike the prototype, French production aircraft were not equipped with weapons. This was largely due to the simultaneous introduction of the Dassault-Breguet/Dornier Alpha Jet, which was specifically intended to provide advanced jet training and weapons instruction. As a result, the TB30 No. 01 remained unique within French service as the only Epsilon to have been extensively tested with armament.

The Epsilon nevertheless achieved considerable success on the export market. Portugal acquired a production license and manufactured the aircraft locally, while Senegal and Togo also became operators. The Togolese Air Force notably received the TB30A variant, which retained the training role while being equipped with armament, giving it a limited light-attack capability.

Characteristics

Length : 7.59 m

Width : 7.92 m

Height : 2.63 m

Mass :

  • Empty : 932 kg
  • Full : 1 250 kg

The aircraft is powered by a 300 hp Lycoming O-540 engine, enabling it to reach a top speed of 378 km/h and a service ceiling of 7,010 m. Its range at a cruising speed of 358 km/h is 1,300 km.

The crew consists of two people, a student pilot in the front seat and an instructor in the rear seat, with both having access to the flight controls.

Weapons

The aircraft’s armament is mounted on four hardpoints (two under each wing) and includes various weapon types, with a maximum payload of approximately 300 kg. The armament consists of the following:

  • 2 x twin 12.7mm machine gun pods
  • 4 x Matra SNEB rocket launchers
  • 4 x light bombs (model unknown)

This armament configuration is particularly interesting because it would allow the in-game aircraft to defend itself quite effectively while retaining a light ground-attack capability—specifically when carrying a loadout of two machine gun pods and two rocket pods.

In the game, this aircraft would be an interesting addition to the French tree, providing a lightly armed trainer with good flight characteristics—a type of aircraft currently missing from the tree.
