BLUF: MAPS AT TOP TIER (9.3+) ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE TANKS WHICH PLAY ON THEM, AND SMALL MAPS SHOULD BE REVAMPED TO BE LARGER OR REMOVED FROM TOP TIER MAP POOL.
The worst offenders in particular are the city maps, Advance to the Rhine, Test site, Attica, Abandoned town, and to a lesser extent Alaska, Japan, and Breslau. Honestly over half of the maps suffer from this issue, and even some of the maps that are usually larger have some small layers (looking at you tiny Ardennes and tiny Sinai)
There needs to be a real push in this community to have top tier (BR 9.3 and above) be exclusively or near exclusively maps like Volokolamsk (personal fav for the aesthetic), Fields of Poland, Big Tunisia, Sands of Sinai, Big Eastern Europe, etc. I think we would see a lot of the other problems people have with the game, big one being the spawncamping, disappear if we went to much larger maps. We could even revamp some current maps (American Desert and Seversk might be good contenders) to retain their current city portions, but with expanded wide-open fields to facilitate more long range play.
The last valid argument, namely that these maps were CAS hell, went away with this update with the introduction of the new SAM systems, meaning that now everyone (more or less, looking at you CLAWS) has a good way to counter CAS.
I see people whine all the time about how big maps are tedious to play. People need to be weaned off the 3-lane garbage COD-style maps and onto maps that are bigger, allow for longer games, well-thought out flanks, and actual strategic contestation of objectives rather than just a meat grinder.
And the best part? These maps which lend themselves to longer games, due to the way Gaijin’s RP system works, would actually help us all gain more RP. A 10-min game on Volo with like 3 or 4 kills will usually net me somewhere in the ballpark of 10K RP and 30-40K SL. And, more importantly, I wont have to force myself to play, because I will actually enjoy the gameplay that is well suited to the era which my vehicle is from. I rest my case
