Sky Sabre/Land Ceptor - Technical data and discussion

Is this thing worth grinding, or is it butchered too much?

it’s much better than the ADATS, but its a lot worse than it should be and can be quite frustrating to use

Well, not now, as DL does not work, so you mostly fire your missiles blind.

Honestly better to cover your Stromer in bushes and hide near the edge of map and hunt those FnF helis.

ADATS have never liked the system and im about a billion rp off Skysabre.

I really want to be optimistic, but I can’t help but feel that they might not fix it.
However, it might still be too early to make these assumtions, until then we just have to hope and pray.

Some fascinating behaviour from CAMM-ER. Not only do they simply refuse to track a moving helicopter but the missiles consistently loop back around to attempt to re-target with one of them (I believe the 7th missile fired) actually eventually killing it.

I wouldn’t even begin to know how to bug report this.

1st missile locked an ATGM that flew right infront of it by the looks of it
The rest I have no clue lmao, Looks to me like they’re tracking where the heli was when lock was obtained.

Would probably help if DL worked lmao (all those CAMMs where fired on IOG)

I should add that I was hard locked on the heli for most of the time here so not really anything more that could have been done on my end either.

Wouldn’t have done anything unfortunately, as stated by Devil above, CAMM currently doesn’t have datalink enabled, so they’re being fired at where the heli would be if the heli kept speed and course, unfortunately they’re wiggiling a fair bit, which is probably leading to the missiles missing as the lock isn’t happening early enough for Missiles to have enough time to turn to the target.

Sorry if that’s ramblily

Makes sense thanks, would still love to know how IOG is letting the missile do almost a full 360 to try to re-track though. Its incredible how much is added into this game before its remotely ready.

Well, it knows where the target is supposed to be, so it tries to position itself.

How come regular A2A missiles don’t do this then? Is this something CAMM-ER can do IRL that isn’t a regular feature of inertial guidance?

That seems to be something that new SPAAs do. As to why, idk. Gaijin doing Gaijin stuff.
If it can do it irl idk. Data is very limited.

Statshark seems to suggest Sky Sabre is doing better than Buk and SAMP k/d wise. What I’ve really liked about the Sky Sabre is the radar mast that goes all the way to the outer space and detects enemy aircrafts before anyone else does

You can also scout with it pretty effectively if you find a decently sized rock to poke the cctv tower out from.

Part 1/2 for video clips
(also please ignore my coughs I didn’t how to turn of the mic thing)

in this video you can see two of the missiles launching without DL or only in the launch stage where it does enter DL

Part 2/2

In this clip I decide to try and lock the helicopter with the optical tracker on the launchers for the Sky Saber (TEL) and once I do that the missile actually enters DL for the entire flight path.

These two clips leads me to believe that Gaijin implemented DL on the Sky Saber wrong due to the fact it requires the launcher to lock the Aircraft. This leads to the Sky Sabers missiles losing much of its capability due to not only most maps but also due to the loss of DL when only the radar detects the aircraft without the Launchers having a line of sight.

So the DL is coming from the LN not the STR?
brilliant.

Update: tried this method. I can, in fact, hit helicopters using DL off the LN. Even low-flying ones. That does appear to be a small silver lining - the IRST has no multipath effect so static low-flying helis are on the table.

How did they even achieve this.

The IRST-based datalink… also falls for flares???

The fact that you can quite literally drive into a forest (depending on the trees) and comfortably still track aircraft is hilarious

In my experience using this method I don’t think I have experienced what is shown in the video however the fact this might be the case is concerning. Until gaijin fixes this I have found a few additional advantages and disadvantages.

1- This is extremely map dependent some maps won’t even provide you with spots with such sight lines.

2- This is only useful for helicopters because they are usually the only aircraft that exposes themselves in a match, most CAS pilots have already learned to continuously fly low or behind cover.

3- the actual IRST lock does not trigger anything on the helicopters allowing you to lock and wait until the right time to launch.

4- if the radar is unable to detect an aircraft and you lock them with the IRST lock the radar now is able to detect the aircraft.

5- this should mean that only dumping chaff won’t help the aircraft as the they have to fool both the radar of the missile and IRST lock which is quite useful unless it is truly broken like the clip that you showed.

Overall all this does give the Sky Saber new tools to play with against enemy Aircraft especially the helicopters. I haven’t tested the full reliability of this method but it is still incredibly useful in the right circumstances.
