Im well aware, “where 9X” has been going at the very least since R-77-1 introduction if not earlier
9Ms dont even pull that bad, they just lack the HOBS capability R-73s have, but the suspended animation IRCCM is much better in some scenarios to FoV gating
Completely agree, if you just lead them yourself and don’t try wacky stuff with them they will hit, and they got the better IRCCM type too, but ofcourse a combination of the 2, such as the 9x has is always better
Ngl the rafale one I didn’t get at all but hey ✨technical capability✨.
So… initial precedent gets overridden by new facts? Say it ain’t so.
sad Russian Su-30 noises.
To ackshually respond to the OP: AIM-9X coming (even if it would simply just be a AIM-9M with thrust vectoring + better seeker) would also mean everything else that’s “comparable” (tbh, pretty much every other IIR missile is leagues above AIM-9X) would also come. By your logic, German/Italian Eurofighters would get IRIS-T, for example, which are leagues better than AIM-9X on way better airframes.
USA will never, ever, ever get something that gives it an advantage over everyone else.
Ignore the F-14A/B when they originally released and no one else having ARH missiles for like 3 years though.
agreed, FOV gating is also on the moment the missile locks a target, even before launch. This can help you launch missiles at preflaring targets and they’ll still hit.
BOL flares struggle with FOV gating as well sometimes, I’ve managed to snipe a couple preflaring gripens with R-73s thanks to this.
seeker shutoff is absolutely better for side-aspect shots and longer range engagements, it’s just better suited for that compared to angle gating
I dont know all about that, my line of reasoning was simpler.
Its hard to flare 9Ms at range accidentally and at close range, the players tend to do all sorts of unpredictable manuevers and time window for hitting is too small for suspended animation to work properly
So, nothing then? The baseline AIM-9X is practically just adding TVC to the sidewinder airframe, and as with all seeker modeling, nothing special. and as the only 5" Diameter missile among the 5th gens its at a unique disadvantage. the respective 8 & 10" dia. offerings far outstrip the Sidewinder and the main advantage of the -9X is the very low unit cost (the unit cost of a MICA-IR is about ~8x more than that of remanufacturing a -9M’s to the -9X spec. with the 9x costing ~ 240k, 2017 USD ) which can’t really be modeled.
All a baseline AIM-9X would do is provide HOBS capability similar to the R-73, with no real material advantage over the -9L/-M since it reuses the same motor.
In terms or IR missiles the US was always going to be hamstrung once Gaijin decided to implement the AIM-9M, as the Counterpart to the R-73 instead of the AIM-95.
