Shenyang J-16D (2026) - The Gray E-Wolf for Suppression in Escalation

Background History
The Shenyang J-16D is the electronic warfare variant of the Shenyang J-16 and was developed to detect and jam enemy radar, communications, and air defense systems. It is based on the J-16 but differs in its extensive EW equipment, special wingtip pods, a modified radar nose, and the omission of the IRST system and the internal 30-mm cannon. The maiden flight is said to have taken place in late 2015, before the J-16D was publicly unveiled for the first time at the 2021 Zhuhai Airshow following several years of secret testing.
Sightings from early 2026 attracted particular attention. For the first time, a J-16D was observed with a new configuration consisting of three RKZ930 series EW pods (specifically what appears to be an RKZ930-10, as well as a new unknown EW pod in another test flight on the forward centerline pylon) and potentially two LD-8A anti-radiation missiles. The EW pod variants identified by their markings - RKZ930-10, RKZ930-22, RKZ930-31, and RKZ930-32 - seen in a new “mashup” configuration, suggest a modular multi-band jamming system capable of covering various frequency ranges and thus achieving a significantly broader electronic effect. This suggests that the J-16D is undergoing continuous development and is now intended not only as an escort jammer but as a versatile platform for electronic attacks, ‘hard’ suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), and support for networked operations with other platforms such as the J-20. We may see more until or on the Air Show later in 2026.
Armament of the J-16D (2026)
The PL-12 and PL-15 family medium to long-range BVR missiles are used for self-defense, in case escort is not there for help. Capability for PL-10s may have been removed, it remains subject for more research but overall it seems the most outer underwing pylon has been deleted.
Anti-Radiation Missiles such as YJ-91 are mainly used to combat ground targets, but these are generally very rarely seen - air-to-sufrace armament carried by J-16 is theoretical still compatible - whether dual PL-12 / -15 rails can be added on underwing pylons is up to you.
The Flankers’ typical main armament, a 30mm Type 30-4, is not present on the J-16D, nor on its PLAN sister aircraft, the J-15D series.

Specifications, Electronics and Internal
Due to its focus on ESM/ELINT/ECM equipment, the J-16Ds armament is less extensive than that of a conventional J-16 or Su-30 but up to four underwing RKZ930 series ‘soft-kill’ ECM pods along with wing tip tactical jamming receiver pods are the hallmarks of the J-16D.
The IRST has also been replaced by additional electronic equipment, likely to increase the on-board AESA radars ECM resistance.
The main body of these four pods is essentially identical, but the antenna arrangement differs, most notably on RKZ930-10, which has four little wing antennas around the frontal area.
This suggests that they are four different sub-models of the RKZ930 series, which likely employ a modular multi-band combination design similar to the RKZ900. Given the simultaneous presentation of these four different submodels, this pod series presumably follows the design philosophy of the U.S. Next Generation Airborne Electronic Jamming Pod (NGJ).
In addition to the low- and high-frequency bands, it features a mid-band jammer combination to ensure effective jamming of all channels - covering the 0.05-20 GHz frequency ranges, at a power level of 100 kW allegedly. So in order to prodivde maximum Band coverage; all pods can be combined and used at once, as the J-16D has been seen carriying mutliple different at once.

The J-16D EW Aircraft in Game - Personal thoughts
Dedicated electronic warfare (EW) aircraft such as the J-16D are currently almost absent from War Thunder, yet they would fit perfectly into Escalation mode. Rather than focusing on direct combat, these aircraft support allied forces through jamming, electronic attack and the suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD).
Generally EW aircraft would be particularly interesting in Escalation mode, as they could escort other players with EW protection, while also getting closer to dangerous flight zones themselves, or significantly increasing the hit probability of their ARMs or other weapons with jammers - which is even balanced out by the lower number of guided weapons such as YJ-91, since jammers and other equipment often take up multiple pylons.
Personally, I consider this one of the most interesting future additions. Electronic warfare is an important aspect of modern air combat that is currently almost absent from the game, and the large scale of Escalation mode would also finally provide an environment where dedicated EW aircraft could fulfill their intended role and contribute to team success in a unique way.
To preserve their unique role, advanced jamming systems could remain exclusive to dedicated EW aircraft. Allowing regular fighters to carry the same equipment would undermine role differentiation and reduce the need for teamwork. Keeping electronic warfare as a specialized capability would encourage cooperation, add strategic depth and introduce an important aspect of modern air combat that is currently missing from the game.
