Background History
In late 2020, a picture attracted the attention of many people because the fighter, suspected to be the rumored J-11D, the latest model in the J-11 series of fighters.
To reduce weight and radar signature, the J-11Ds construction made greater use of composite materials, particularly in the wings and air intakes. These materials not only contribute to weight reduction but also improve the aircraft’s structural integrity and RCS reduction.
A key feature of the J-11D is the integration of a new Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, which is most likely angled similarly to that of the J-10C to make use of the space for a larger sized antenna and further reduce RCS.
Although the J-11D shows significant advances over its predecessors, the project was reportedly abandoned in favor of upgrades to existing models such as the J-15D and J-15T - which share the same or very similar features as the J-11D at the time, including a canted radar dome - and the development of more advanced platforms such as the J-20A.
In total, only two J-11D prototypes are known to have been built. As early as a few years ago, the rumors about the J-11D were widely known, but with the mass of new aicraft such as the J-20 and J-16, the popularity of the J-11D decreased and both prototypes disappeared from public view - just to be reborn as J-15T.
Armament of the J-11D
The main armament remains the Type 30-4 cannon. Like its predecessor, the J-11B, the J-11D theoretically has access to various guided air-to-ground bombs and missiles, as well as the PL-12/A and PL-10. It is assumed that the upgrade would also have included the new PL-15 and PL-17 long range missile.
Two additional pylons under the wings were once spotted, allowing for two more BVR missiles and theoretically two more guided air-to-ground weapons.
