Shenyang J-11, J-16, J-15, History, Performance & Discussion

IDK but what does grayish mean?

I missed the R at first … Was wondering what are you talking about …

NATO applies the same name to a family of fighter jets, the J-11 belong to the Flanker family. I don’t know what nonsense argument you are trying to make here. Do you think the J-11’s deserve a new name since they are clearly not just the same airframe with only minor modifications?

I mean… MiG-21 vs J-7?

I was hoping for this one made by the same guy, but I’m still glad we got a high quality J-11B skin that actually makes the plane look both clean and modern, as opposed to the heavily weathered stock skins.

I mean I guess his point is that China didn’t use the name flanker, they have their own thing, like neither do Russians use ‘flanker’ for Su27s. This is a NATO designation and can’t be over interpreted. I mean, do Russians want their planes to be called Felon and Frogfoot?

hows J11B sustained turnrate compared to su30sm

Better rn as it is lighter and has more thrust, Su-30SM tends to lose more energy in turns.

Well it does have its own name

“responsive dragon”

And I’m sure it sounds cool in Chinese :)

NATO names are kinda irrelevant … They are only for use within a particular organization …

Here people use them frequently, because that’s how the plane is known in the English speaking world … But just because the English speaking world calls native Americans “Indians” doesn’t mean they are the same people as the actual Indians …

(I understand that the Chinese and Russian Flankers share the same root and are very similar … I’m just saying that the NATO names don’t mean anything …)

应龙 (Yìng Lóng) - J-11 family
潜龙 (Qián Lóng) - J-16s

None of them are referred by their NATO designation in China, I’d imagine Russia wouldn’t want to refer to its own jets by names such as:

light grey

Poor MiG-15 probably has it the worst

Technically the designation “fagot” is referring to bundles of sticks used as fuel to start a fire, though it is unfortunately rather similar to a derogatory term.

In terms of progression with CN Flankers, I would say we skip the Su30MKK and head to the Su30MK2 instead. I would prefer a J16 or one of it’s derivatives instead however it would be nice to see regardless. Not sure where we would put the J15 and all it’s variants however.

The J-7 made major visual modifications to the airframe such as double delta wings. These aircraft had massive structural changes compared to the Russian MiG-21’s and operated in areas where the difference between a fishbed and a fishcan could mean winning or losing a fight. The fishcans were using more advanced weaponry at one point, such as the PL-5 and PL-8 when the MiG-21’s were utilizing only R-3S, R-60, etc.

Aside from that, the capabilities of the Russian and Chinese flankers is not as varied as the MiG-21 to J-7.

All of the analogies you and the others have made to try and discredit my point on the Chinese flankers being only minor derivatives of their Russian origin have failed.

I would say there is no reason to give China a Russian export fighter at this point, they have their own indigenous modifications and designations.

For a multirole fighter, the J-15 is a superior choice.

ofc they mean something, do you really think they would make that whole system for no reason whatsoever?

really? i always heard it was the musical instrument they named it after

I’m unaware of the CAS abilities of the baseline J15, otherwise a J15A or J16 would be better options imo

J-15 = the air-to-air fire control system of the J-11B + the air-to-ground/surface fire control system of the JH-7A + two additional hardpoints
