Selectable Spawn Altitudes for Bombers

The Problem: Bomber Obsolescence

For years, the survivability of bombers in War Thunder has fluctuated through various buffs and nerfs to airframe durability and defensive gunner AI. Currently, bombers are in a precarious state. At lower BRs, they can be anywhere from easy to moderately difficult to shoot down, but as we move into the Jet Age, the balance completely collapses.

Standard bombers currently spawn at roughly 4–5 km altitude. While this was acceptable for WWII-era prop combat, it is fundamentally broken in the era of supersonic interceptors. Aircraft like the F-104 Starfighter, F-106 Delta Dart, and Lightning can reach 5 km in a matter of seconds. Combined with maps that grant these interceptors an air spawn, bombers are often intercepted and destroyed before they are even halfway to their first bombing base.

The Current Crisis: The “Nuclear Thunder” Experience

The recent addition of legendary strategic bombers like the Tu-95M and B-52H has shown how deep this issue goes. These aircraft are incredibly popular, leading to long queue times, yet the gameplay experience is often “Spawn and Die.”

Despite their massive size and historical roles as high-altitude platforms, they are forced into the same 4–5 km spawn window. In a typical match, they are intercepted by jets before they can even level out their speed. Historically, these aircraft were designed to operate at altitudes exceeding 10,000 meters (10 km) to stay above the effective ceiling of many early interceptors or to give them time to react to incoming threats. In the current game state, they are merely “target practice.”

The Proposal: Selectable Spawn Altitudes

To fix this, I propose that bombers should be allowed to choose their entry altitude on the spawn screen, similar to how players choose fuel loads or weapon presets.

  • Available Altitudes: 4km, 5km, 6km, 7km, 8km, 9km, and 10km.
  • Mechanic: Upon selecting a bomber in the spawn menu, a dropdown menu allows the player to select their desired altitude.
  • Balance: To prevent bombers from being “untouchable,” this feature would primarily benefit high-tier strategic bombers that currently lack any defensive utility against Mach 2 interceptors (For example, Rank 5 or BR 7.0 and above).
  • Exception: Jet bombers. This is for the jet bombers that we have in the game currently and for those that will be added in the future (i.e Tu-16, Tu-22, Tu-160, B-1, Valkyrie). Also depending on their speed and how quickly some bombers can achieve high altitude. B-2’s maximum speed is only 630 mph on the other hand, even though its a jet bomber.

This suggestion is not going to massively benefit bomber players, interceptors will still be able to shoot down the bombers but it will take them longer to do it, possibly allowing bomber players to have more time to react and defend themselves.

We are slowly heading into a new phase, where bombers in War Thunder will become missile carriers, nuclear bombs carriers for future game modes and for the first time in many years, “bombers” will become dangerous again (if you remember Tu-4 players wiping out bases and airfields you’re a legend).

Please let me know what you think, share your thoughts and suggestions here.

Bombers def suffer from aircraft around them evolving, you can see in low tier how most bombers can just fly into enemy territory and come back unscathed.

Not the rework im looking for but it will do.

Been terrified of F-106, getting to the point of not bothering to crew my Tu-95M, even for the GRB +1

this would be op you would need to find a way have to regulate it some how as the B52 is almost untouchable to 8.7 fighters if it climbs and they can just sit at altitude forever

It shouldn’t be too hard to cap the max available alt option based of BR, say capped at say 6000m at 8.7 then 10000 to 15000 for 9.7 with the mach 2 interceptors with radar missiles.
whether or not Gaijin would put in the effort is another matter.

The only real hope of bombers is a suitable gamemode, but this can help

If I could I would vote 10000 +.
Enough of being intercepted in 4.3 by anything, I just want to play G4N1

yeah im all for it in uptiers but if you dont cap it a B52 will be broken AF

Well, “broken asf” would be if it could kill with no opposition. The fact that it could run away with no opposition is more like “annoying asf.” Most bomber players actually don’t enjoy being out of everyone’s reach doing nothing for an entire match; they would fully enjoy being able to engage in a fight, if it weren’t for the fact that they’re at a complete disadvantage.

They really just need to make new gamemodes like nuclear thunder. Either way +1

not really it be literally almost unkillable as it has way better atltitude perfromance than any 8.7 fighter it can sit at 50K feet with ease while sabres struggle to get that high same with migs and it can go very fast like .87 mach at that altitude

and it doesnt help that 50% of 8.7s only have 50cals meaning youd basically be stalling try to hit them and it almost do nothing plus your forced to come from the front of the B52 as the deadly M61 is in the rear

Ain’t no way ur complaining about bomber survivability 💀

son that is not survibility its flight performance the B52 can get downtiered to from 8.7 to 7.7 a F80 C is not catching that thing especially if it gets a 30k feet spawn instead of 15k it literally out runs most early jets by just pure speed

we clearly are not thinking

That’s called compression and it’s problem for everyone. Bomber survivability is nonexistent and so it should be fixed

fixing something by making compression worse is not the answer simple solution is giving it a increase alt spawn for uptiers only

thats like saying dropping the rafale to 14.3 cause it struggles against SU30-SM2

The B-52 is eaten alive by supersonics is it not. If given more altitude it won’t be instakilled

we could also base the limit of spawn hieght based on the match rather than BR or rank, that way it can spawn 36000ft in the air in uptiers but only at 15000ft in downtiers. We are humans capable of adapting and logic not caterpillars

unless u want bombers to be free kills?

i already said that ?

Yes, not all fighters were designed as high-altitude fighters, you can’t avoid that.
The question is what were the actual interceptors doing and why did they fail at their objective?
It’s like calling the B-17 overpowered just because the only one left on the enemy team is an Il-2 that can’t climb.
