SEAD: Asymmetrical Battle Returns!

On October 17th 1965 during Operation Iron Hand in the Vietnam War, a strike against SAM positions occurred, making it the first operation to suppress missile air defenses. The operation lasted until 1973 and consisted of many individual SEAD missions.

Put on your helmets, pilots! It’s time to fly straight into the Air Defense Suppression event, an asymmetrical game mode in which one team attacks while the other defends strategic S-75 air defense positions.

When: From October 16th (11:00 GMT) until October 19th (11:00 GMT).

Where: You can access the event from the hangar through: Events & Tournaments → Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses

How the event works

The defending team in this event must protect AI controlled Soviet S-75 surface-to-air missile systems. Helping to defend these systems are AI controlled ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” anti-air vehicles. Both of these potent air defense systems pose a deadly threat to the attacking team — they’ll need to learn the terrain, come up with approach tactics and use the most effective selection of weaponry to be successful.

Roles and Objectives

Attacking Team

Your mission is to destroy all S-75 SAM positions at all costs! Not only do the attackers have aircraft, they also have helicopters, opening up new possibilities for stealthy attacks and pinpoint missile strikes. The F-4E Phantom II serves as the primary strike force, equipped with rockets and bombs for ground targets, along with air-to-air missiles for engaging enemy aircraft.

The AH-1F is armed with ATGMs and rockets, capable of providing more precise air-to-ground fire to take out the air defense missile systems.

Defending Team

Your mission is to defend the S-75 positions from the attacking enemy! Coordinate your actions with other players and build a layered defense to counter the attacking team. You’ll be equipped with the MiG-21bis, armed with air-to-air missiles to repel enemy aircraft.

Event Features

Here are some key event features that are useful to know:

  • The gameplay in this event is asymmetrical. One team attacks and the other defends. This requires you to adapt to different roles and strategies.
  • There are no markers in this mode, so you’ll not see enemy icons on the map. Use your aircraft’s systems and piloting skills to find and destroy the enemy. The only exception is protecting spawn points. If the enemy is circling directly above them, they will be visible on the map.
  • Each player has 3 respawns, giving both teams the flexibility to experiment with tactics, and giving the attacking players the ability to use different types of vehicles.
  • The attacking team has access to both helicopters and planes, offering unique opportunities in coordinating attacks to take enemies out from afar and support friendly planes.
  • All players that have an aircraft of rank V or higher in their hangar can participate in the event.
  • The vehicles that you’ll use in the event are automatically assigned and don’t need to be purchased.
  • Vehicles have a spawn cost in Silver Lions which will be refunded if the plane is not destroyed when the mission ends or if you exit the plane in the safe exit zones. The amount of refunded Silver Lions depends on the condition of the aircraft.
  • Safe exit zones become available for aircraft once all the weapons of a certain type have been expended. If you have spawned in with air-to-ground weaponry, you will need to use all of it, air-to-air missiles are not taken into account, however, if you have spawned in with just air-to-air missiles, you will need to use all of them.
  • You can earn research points and Silver Lions by taking part in the event.

Why not in Random Battles?

Asymmetrical modes are not for everyone, and they have their own specific approach. As players queue in random battles with their own custom lineup, if they were to randomly encounter a game mode like this, they may incidentally have an ineffective selection of vehicles that aren’t suitable for a more specialized mission like this one. “Suppression of Enemy Air Defense” requires certain vehicles and weapons for interesting and effective gameplay. In addition, the difficulty of the event (due to the presence of S-75s and a large number of very effective Shilkas) may be too high for random battles, where players often use a variety of vehicles to complete more general objectives.

Why no anti-radiation missiles?

After internal testing, ARMs were deemed to be too effective in the missions of this event and didn’t allow for the defending team to successfully repel the attack, making the game one-sided, which is why we’ve decided not to make them available in this SEAD event. But you can still use ARMs in Nuclear Escalation where they fit the mission well.

Don’t miss the chance to participate in this unique event from October 16th to October 19th! Make sure to prepare for intense air battles that require teamwork and excellent piloting. See you in the sky!

Not touching this until Nuclear Escalation’s AA becomes more playable at lower tiers. Without ARMs, I would expect this to be even more painful.

Honestly do not know what Gaijin is thinking running this while Nuclear Escalation gets next to zero games at lower tiers because of the AA. Feels like a kick in the teeth personally.

I was hoping for the WW1 Mode to return and bring with it more obtainable vehicles :/

Wow that is a long “operation” … I always thought of military operations being relatively short things (more tactical than strategic or drawn out)

So… while I’m here, any chance of getting the OG “SEAD” (and asymmetrical) operation back, the “War in Mid Air” event … (anyone old enough to remember that one… I loved it).

Why are we limited to rubbish aircraft again?

So, any change for S-75 with 99% accuracy? Any balance chance about defenders winning most of the battle?

If the F-4E is considered rubbish for a Vietnam oriented mode, I think that says something about the state of it…

I just finding it boring that every single time we have one of these test events over the past 2 years its always F-4Es vs Mig-21/23s

Would be nice if they picked some different vehicles or allowed the event to be tested with just anything.

And F-4E isnt good because you cant even use its primary weapon with everyone hugging the deck.
