I think the E is the only one that has been seen carrying them but i think the C is technically also able but haven’t been seen with them.
It could be
I suppose Prior to joining NATO, there wasnt much reason to spend money on something like that. I wonder if they might in the coming years. Though wouldnt be surprised if they waited for Spear-3s to hit the market rather than getting Brimstones
Well most of our biggest threats is naval based, like the Swedes coming ashore :p
Seriously though its mostly that we focus on naval vs actual ground.
We’ve had a very limited amount of A2G weapon systems, probably because the planes we have would’ve been preoccupied with shooting down enemy planes.
So GBU-12/GBU-49 and GBU-39 have been all that we’ve used so far since the old AGM-65’s were taken out of service many years ago.
BK90 was used but since we signed the treaty to not use cluster munitions those were scrapped.
Recently we have bought KEPD 350, 39C will fly with them in service in about two years and 39E another year or two after that iirc.
Brimstone can quite quickly be integrated in the Gripen platform but since none of the nations who fly the Gripen uses the Brimstone it has not yet taken flight with them. As you may have seen SAAB has offered the Brimstone along with Gripen previously so integrating them wouldn’t be much of a hassle.
I must say that I hope we buy Brimstone or Spear-3 sometime soon.
Gripen E with 2x RB 98, 3x RB 101, 6x Brimstone/Spear-3 all while still carrying 2 EFT. Really long range and still with weapons for many targets!
looks like thai gripen coming sooner than later?
Idk, 2030, unless they also do that to other systems that haven’t been delivered, then I don’t expect to see thai Gripen E in game ant time soon
Something cool and interesting from the Swedish defence forces youtube uploaded 3 days ago. The guy talking is the head of the air combat school.
Practice shots against drones and cruise missiles. The most interesting part is at 1:30 where he states that the Gripen is “one among very few aircraft that is gen 4 with a mechanical radar but can still detect these kinds of targets” (paraphrasing).
Another configuration of integrated MAWS sensor at the front near the base of the canards it seems like for the 39E.
Video from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-f0WLv2rqE
Edit: Might be an interesting video to watch. Anyone that is able to translate this, would be nice to see what they talk about in the video. Please and thanks.
Some highlights (about 39E) from the video:
- Looks very similar to the 39C, but the internals are completely redesigned.
- Much more focus on electronic warfare/passive sensors/sensor fusion (preferably you should not have to even turn on the radar)
- The sensor fusion is partially using AI/Machine learning
- AESA radar, can track ground, sea, air, all at the same time
- The IRST can track targets from 300-500km away (with multiple planes the IR tracks can be triangulated to get ranges)
- The MAWS IR system is sensitive enough to pick up missile launches as they happen (from “very long distances”), both from ground and sea, spherical coverage
- Same internal gun as before
- 30% more fuel compared to before, ~30% more thrust than before
- Electronic warfare systems are integrated into the weapon pylons on the wings (hence why they are bigger). No EW pods required.
- You can place active jammers on the pylons (something like BriteCloud if you want to google it, the specific jammer is not mentioned)
- 10 Pylons on the 39E
- 300km range on the anti ship missiles (RBS 15 MkIV)
- The engines are modular and can be swapped in an hour. The pilot witnessed a swap in 46m. No special tools or technicians required.
They really need to buy Striker II for the Gripen E. That would be a powerful combo
Aye appreciate it. Nice to learn more about the 39E especially on the upgrades with EW focused avionics along with other things.
Though too bad we won’t see half of these systems in War Thunder unless EW comes soon.
What hmd does gripen e use irl? Same one that the c has in game I assume?
If some of the NG’s are to go off of it could or it could be different depending on what the buyer wants
Gripen C uses BAE Cobra (essentially a slightly worse Striker I) and later the Striker I, Gripen E is offered with either BAE Cobra, Striker I and Striker II seemingly is planned:
Both snippets from SAAB and BAE.
This is in Swedish from the yearly report of the defence forces which is an open document. Some pretty interesting stuff in it, no hard details on exactly what system but gives a decent general overview. Here on page 50 a new flight helmet is one of the things that is coming in the block updates of MS20.
Further reading in the document:
MS20 Block 2.1 is in service now (Feb 2025), Block 3 will be in service 2026 and Block 4 will be in service 2028. These include new radar (maybe the same AESA as 39E), new EWS, KEPD 350 Taurus and other things.
So far the plan is for 60 39C/D to be upgraded and 45 to be taken out of service, the latter has however been pushed forward to see how the 39E fairs and how quickly it will get up to speed. I do wish to see those 45 aircraft, when the time comes, to also be upgraded to the new standards and be sent to Ukraine.
(This link below is the website where the document above is found)
Yeah seems they plan to upgrade the HMD and as Cobra and Striker I are already there… I’d say that pretty much confirms and upgrade to Striker II where possible. Makes sense as it is truly the best HMD out there.
SAAB dropped a video on the JAS-39E’s EW system couple days ago.
Pretty gnarly stuff
I don’t buy all the digital stealth stuff from SAAB or Eurofighter or Dassault but I do buy damn good EW systems like Arexis…
Awwwwwwwww, that’s bad, Swedish Premium Grinder are really bad compared to others.
