SAAF JAS-39C Technical Data and Discussion

Most of the Scandi nations dont even have helicopters for AT purposes so what purpose does CAS serve for the most part. Its why Norway would arguably be the best addition to guve sweden actual CAS.

I think the E is the only one that has been seen carrying them but i think the C is technically also able but haven’t been seen with them.

It could be

I suppose Prior to joining NATO, there wasnt much reason to spend money on something like that. I wonder if they might in the coming years. Though wouldnt be surprised if they waited for Spear-3s to hit the market rather than getting Brimstones

Well most of our biggest threats is naval based, like the Swedes coming ashore :p

Seriously though its mostly that we focus on naval vs actual ground.

We’ve had a very limited amount of A2G weapon systems, probably because the planes we have would’ve been preoccupied with shooting down enemy planes.

So GBU-12/GBU-49 and GBU-39 have been all that we’ve used so far since the old AGM-65’s were taken out of service many years ago.

BK90 was used but since we signed the treaty to not use cluster munitions those were scrapped.

Recently we have bought KEPD 350, 39C will fly with them in service in about two years and 39E another year or two after that iirc.

Brimstone can quite quickly be integrated in the Gripen platform but since none of the nations who fly the Gripen uses the Brimstone it has not yet taken flight with them. As you may have seen SAAB has offered the Brimstone along with Gripen previously so integrating them wouldn’t be much of a hassle.

I must say that I hope we buy Brimstone or Spear-3 sometime soon.

Gripen E with 2x RB 98, 3x RB 101, 6x Brimstone/Spear-3 all while still carrying 2 EFT. Really long range and still with weapons for many targets!
