SAAF JAS-39C Technical Data and Discussion

Well I got multiple photos to prove that :) At least for hardpoints and IRST.

But they can always claim “marketing lie” :)))

Do any of the c or e gripens get maws

IRL the C has it as a pod system that connects with the BOL pods (My report on it that has been sent to the DEV’s: Community Bug Reporting System ) and the E has it built into the airframe.

is it all aspect (360 degrees) and do you know the range?

Depends on how the pod configured, it customizable on a mission to mission basis. I don’t think anyone has exact number as that would likely be classified.

Would that pod be an ir or radar maws? Also, is the gripen e maws ir or radar

IR or UV

IR or UV.

And in the context of War thunder, may not matter. As we see with TERMA, it should require 2x Pods for true all-aspect but in-game 1 provides all-aspect due to game limitations. So the same may be true for the Gripen C

UV i think.

unfortunate that it uses uv maws instead of ir… pretty sure ir is advantageous over uv in most situations, it’s why the su-57 testbed for the new version has ir maws and uv maws instead of just uv maws. @MythicPi i think you got a picture comparing the differences between the 3 maws types?

I have no idea how credible this source is, but it might help with searching: Elbit Will Help Defend Future Gripens | Aviation International News

Previously UV, now IR.

I dont have any image that compares them off the top of my head, but the pros and cons for the 3 systems are easy to find on google.

The pod is IR/UV MAWS (i think both at the same time but i’m unsure). Both gripen versions have an integrated system called EWS 39 (Electric Warfare Suite 39) and one of the functions it performs is RWR both for enemy radar, it detects missiles and can even jam both enemy planes and enemy missiles (it can also act as a passive detection system together with other Gripens to triangulate enemies in 3D space to know where the enemy is just by calculating the difference in time between when each Gripen in the air gets pinged by a radar). The Gripen E additionally gets integrated IR/UV MAWS sensors (google images of the Gripen E and you can see one such sensor just Infront of the canards) and the EWS 39 is massively updated. That together with the new IRST makes the Gripen E VERY good at passive detection to the point where (if i remember correctly) it can guide ARH missiles just by knowing where the enemy plane is because that plane is using it’s radar to try to find you or it’s jammers to try to hide from you (so practically turning the AIM 120 into a passively guided anti-radiation missile with home-on-jam features).

I think it depends on what the buyer chooses, Gripen (much like the CV90) is a system where you sort of build your own with lego pieces until you have something that meets your requirements and for the budget you have. I think the two most talked about options are IDAS ( Integrated self-protection suite | Saab ) or standalone MAW300/400, IDAS has IR based MAW (but can use the MAW300/400 instead as well) and the MAW-300/400 has UV based MAW.

This is why Gripen is popular with smaller countries with a lower military budget because they can customize according to needs and don’t need to buy EVERYTHING to get that one specific function they really need (that and easy and low maintenance).

technically not gripen c but where’s the nctr in the cockpit of the gripen a? i dont see it on the radar mfd.
statcard says it should have nctr

another question, I thought gripen c got an upgraded radar over the a but it seems they’re the same?

Not like there really is a Gripen A forum, the C kinda got moved here since the UK got the C before anyone else and the Swedish Gripen C forum was more so myself and others asking Smin why the Swedish Gripen was worse than the SAAF version for about 3 weeks.

The Gripens in game are fake. Gaijin has admitted they have no interest in historical accuracy for the sake of balance its easier to mix parts from all MS models and call it a day rather than correctly implement the Gripens, its why the C’s are all copies of the A and partial copies of the later MS models, gaijin probably could’ve negated this problem by adding the A before we got the C but snails gotta powercreep
