I’m starting to grind the Russian ground tree and wanted to ask which premium would make sense, or if Russia is strong enough that a premium isn’t really needed.
(Everything except the BMPT)

2S38 very deadly if you know how to use it.
IS-6 is quite a beast too same as T-10A.
BMD4M is fun, literally a nuke speed run machine.

I’m not USSR player, but I grinded few trees and I own plenty of premiums. Here how it usually goes.
I like to have one or two III / IV era vehicles.
I use them for fun, daily quests, wagners because it’s way easier to do good score at lower BRs and most important for training crews. I totally stopped playing without expert crews.
Then, when I’m getting close I usually buy VI era vehicle to speed up top tier grind. Something reliable, not higher than 11.0
I decided to leave the USSR but I got up to IV era and I created a premium wishlist.
T-34-100 is unique and looks fun. Also 6.3 lineup is pretty strong.
T-80UD is really strong at 10.7. It lacks thermals if I remember correctly but that’s a great exchange for a lower BR. Awesome deal.
Also the pack with T-34-85 and IS-1 is solid.
edit: wait for sale and buy a lot of premium time + vehicles of your choice

Well seeing as you are new player, get premium time instead of premium vehicle and progress through TT at your own pace.
You gain way more experience than just jumping to top tier in order to get molested by players who know what they are doing.

He has top tier air and also has the Tiger, also he’s at level 26 so maybe he should buy a prem vehicle rather than account time since he seems to know what he’s doing. He also has Leopard 1 L/44 (Leopard 2 Gun)

So, just because someone has high Rank/BR vehicles, doesn’t mean they “know what they are doing” yet.
@dr_shade I am going to post some of your stats from Statshark NOT to “stat shame” you, but to help us share better recommendations with you.

@F16XLWT First, we have his highest Ground Units in GRB. He only has one vehicle above Rank 3 and that is the Leopard A1A1 (L/44) | War Thunder Wiki @ Rank 6 – 9.3 BR. And his stats speak for themself. He jumped in over his head and does not have a firm grasp of the high Rank ground game play yet. Low rating, very low K/D at 0.20
Even in Ground Arcade the stats are also low. Rating is still low with the Leo, K/D is a bit “better” @ ~0.60, but still low for arcade. Again, he does not have a firm grasp on high Rank ground game play,
He has only played 37 GRB matches an 42 ARB matches in the Leo. Giving him advice to throw himself into another High/Top rank tank is not the best recommendation. Imo, nothing higher than 9.0 BR, maybe 10.0 BR MAX. But at 10.3 BR he is going to be thrown into nearly all uptiers because of the BMPT’s @ 11.3 BR.
So, having said that, my recommendation for the absolute highest BR Russian Ground vehicle to consider would be the BMP-4M.
And I am not even necessarily recommending that. I just saying that it should be the absolute maximum consideration for RU’s ground premiums. With the BMP-4M being same/one step higher BR than the Leo that he already has, this might be a bad recommendation to begin with.

No way. Not with how his game play as been going with the Leopard A1A1 (L/44) | War Thunder Wiki, and that is only at 9.3 BR. He needs to learn lower Rank/BR game play still.

I didn’t realize that he had so few battles, it wasn’t displaying for me on Stat Shark so I just assumed he had to have some ground experience to buy a tank that is selling for $60 dollars.

Gotcha! Please add in more of your thoughts for RU ground units, I am thinking even the BMP-4M is a bit high. It has SO many features, a lot to get a handle on for a newer player. ATGM, IRST, hydro suspension, Thermals, etc etc etc. Its great, but it takes a lot to use it to it’s max potential.
I am a Light Tank FIEND, but ‘most’ players don’t like them as much as I do 😂 So, I always try to pull in as many counter recommendations to my Light Tank obsession lul.
Even the other Rank 6 premium MBT’s might be too much, battle rating wise. Rank 5 might be about the max Rank/BR for OP here.
Rank 4 might even be a better spot. I know they can’t grind as far as the higher ones, but he might have a better time and get a much better feel for everything. After seeing the numbers, he should get the bmpt-72, I think

Starting out with an unskilled crew those might not be the best options with their reload times, they are not as bad as the IS-2 but they will still be painful, 19.5 secs base down to ~17 secs max/ experted, especially for a newer player that is less sure of a single shot kill.
Thank you for your understanding, not many people are this cooperative. Also I’m not a Russian main, (only Russian tanks I have are Finnish PT-76 and Finnish T-34 1940).
I just looked at the wiki a couple minutes after writing this first sentence, looked at some of the stats; unlike you, I like the versatility of MBTs since you are able to take a few hits. Anyway, I found that the best tanks were the following:
T-44-122, good armor, firepower, can hold it’s own in partial uptiers
IS-6, Good Armor, Good Firepower, not as good in uptiers but more armor
T-55-AM-1, Supar armor, excellent firepower, can use ATGM with 600mm of pen at 9.0 against targets without ERA, can switch to APDS or APDSFS if needed. +Good reload.

@dr_shade What’s your playstyle, MBTs (Versatile, jack of all trades, master of none), Light tanks, heavy tanks or heavy firepower.
