I have never advocated for this.
That is wrong. Rooftop MGs where implemented as AA weapons. Tanks which had no AA purpose had them removed. Like the British shermans.
Today the purpose of these Mgs is again against targets above a tank. The newest tank on the planet the KF 51 Panther has a roof Mg for anti drone warfare… Which is anti air warfare.
Your lack of knowledge is the biggest thing we need to remove
They’re mounted for the purpose of offering cover fire to infantry against other infantry.
You have.
There. You clearly said that.
Tanks originally were designed to push through trenches. Machine guns at that time were set on the sides of the hull to kill as they passed infantry.
In WW2 this transitioned to protect against propeller aircraft and still to provide cover for infantry.
In the cold war jets became common place and moved out of tank’s effective range, but helicopters were becoming a threat and could still be engaged.
In the modern age both jets and helicopters outrange tank’s machine guns. You need dedicated SPAA vehicles to engage aircraft.
Infantry tanks usually go into battle buttoned up not with somebody sitting on the back firing. The surrounding infantry cover the tank against other infantry.Read a book mate.
I clearly said they rotate too fast.
That means they should rotate slower.
If you’re advocating for a crew member to be exposed to fire the roof mounted machine gun then I would agree with you whole heartedly.
And? Those are very much not “roof mounted MGs”
like you can not compare hull Mgs to roof Mgs. They are two entirely seperate things for seperate purposes.
No
You do not as the current ongoing wars show.
Do you fly?
The current ongoing wars where neither side has air superiority because of ground based dedicated SPAA systems and lack of advanced fighter aircraft?
Those wars?
Where do you think the idea of putting a machine gun on a tank came from?
Based on what evidence
Based on ingame performance.
A sure… Hence why one side repeatedly lost aircraft to fixed non radar positions and one even to a bolt action rifle.
Low flying jets have been damaged in the Kosovo war. They have been heavily damaged in russias Afghanistan war.
Low flying attack jets are still required to flay in a straight line and can therefore be hit by even a 9mm pistol.
Do you have access to their performance statistics?
They are though? You have already seen the videos of people whipping around machine guns in this thread and drones can be downed by small arms fire so a machine would very much do the job as well.
You literally just admitted you were wrong. You have admitted that the roof mounted machine guns used on tanks in the cold war and the guns have literally not changed into the modern era, is somewhat effective against helicopters aka you get close you die. The only reason mgs lost their effectiveness against helis irl is due to long range missiles, so rocket spammers in warthunder will still get downed.
What? Not all drones carry missiles (or any armament) and I assume you have seen the videos out of ukraine were drones drop explosive onto tanks. These drones are usually quite close to the battlefield and tanks.
None of this is reality.
Do you?
On the roof of a Tank.
That Idea was an interwar choice. The first recored use was during the Chinese japanse war against Prop planes.
Roof Mgs have been created as anti air weapons.
