Which is not true. Not only do they do exercises together with USA pretty often, but they just signed trilateral defense agreement few days ago that only is going to increase them. What they lack is land based cooperation in big style - but when it comes to Navy and Airforces, they are do cooperating there more openly.

The relationship between South Korea and Japan’s navy and air force is more of a military confrontation than cooperation.
I don’t know why put so much importance on that trilateral defense ministers meeting.
The result of the consultation was to respond to China’s expansionist policies with the United States in Asia, and to the regular participation of South Korea and Japan in U.S.-hosted exercises.
Both Korea and Japan cooperate with the United States, not with the two countries.
