Regenerative Steering Feedback and Discussion

Oh gawd damn it… that is such a perfect set up for a joke that would 100% get me a ban…

WIP… Also 70 ton tanks don’t turn on a dime… I would make a joke about learning everything you know about tanks from “girls und panzer” but even the animators of that show understand what happens when you try to drift them better then you
GUP drift

They are still gathering feedback, including the consensus that the mechanic is currently flawed, specially in Leopard 2’s case, for two distinct issues that hinder their low speed mobility too much.

I don’t think it’s physics for the Leo 2s, just Gaijin messing up the implementation of RS on the leo 2s.

I thought that was already obvious from the discussion you had with him in the dev server patch notes thread. He also is hilariously hypocritical.

So you just made this up?

I said:

“It SHOULD feel more like Type 10 currently does”.

It SHOULD. Not “the developers have made an official statement yada yada”. You are the one making things up.

We are striving towards improving and polishing the mechanic so it brings in the best of it without the artificial downsides caused by the subpar modelling.

Yet you keep acting like the only choice is “yes” or “no” for the current WIP iterations as if it justified going against polishing it for implementation.

Well, as of right now, that’s pretty much how it looks

Besides, the devs themselves stated that track braking is physically impossible on certain tanks.
At this point, I’m not really sure what specifically can be improved here to make everyone happy.

Leo 2s feel a little clunky, but they are a metric shit ton heavier and physics is what it is

I know it’s just an user mission so maybe it’s the SEP V3 that’s “too good” at the moment but it’s 7 tonnes heavier than the 2A6 and feels like a light tank compared to it.

Unless of course Gaijin will come up with some bullshit like “according to our sources the Leo 2s transmission is heavily flawed and outdated”

this conversation feels like watching someone grab something out of the oven mid bake and then complaining that it isn’t done yet

They however asked for feedback, which is what we are providing.

Look at this; someone has made custom tests of what Regenerative Steering should and could look like.

If it was like this, everyone would be satisfied, even without toggles. THIS is what we are working for.

See, turns at low speeds are pretty much as they are in Live, except without losing speed and smoother. Still quite, QUITE tight.

All while driving at high speeds will finally be possible without bleeding all your speed on any turn. THIS is the goal.

The whole thing was done by @Poi-tato, I just changed the map and the tank!

But someone here said that regenerative steering auto adjusts to each tank based on it’s gear ratios so in theory it should work “correctly”

The issue is, as someone brought up, gear ratios indeed.

Leopard 2, for instance, has 4 gears forward in real life; but 8 in War Thunder.

This means that it will be reaching a point where turn becomes WAY too wide, WAY too early.

In Gears 1-2, it works wonderfully. But even Gear 3 (CC1, 18 km/h) has a too wide radius already.

Like, CC2, to reach the common Combat Speed of 35 km/h, is 6th gear already, when it should be 2nd…

Exactly, I don’t know how many gears the M41 has but as you can see it never goes above 4.

On the opposite side the Maus is the absolutely worst thing I’ve tried. In 8th gear it doesn’t turn at all, like literally.

yeah, I understand it’s a WIP, I’m just saying an extra 30 tons or so would make some logical sense to take longer to brake down and turn then the Type 10. But it dose “feel” like it’s just not working properly rather then a mass/ speed issue.

“well the Panther had transmission issues and we can find no sources that it was improved for the one in the Leo 2”

The extra gears is for modelling things like torque converters. The leclerc has 10 forward gears ingame but drives perfectly with double differential steering enabled (its completing tight turns even on 7-8th gear). this is a case of the Leopard 2 being the odd one out and needs refinement with its gear ratios.

Quite interesting, thank you!

This proves that regenerative steering is NOT the issue, it’s just and mostly Leopard 2’s implementation along with a few global issues that could be polished.

I also tried out some cold war MBTs like the Leopard 1, Chieftain or Centurion and they were improved massively. Though the low speed “bugs” are still present, the one where it just keep accelearating even when you are just pressing A or D is quite annoying

It’s honestly a really usefull feature, especially for the Type 10 and the TKX, but i dont really like it to be honest. It takes you way too long to completly turn while driving, also making sharp turns is basically impossible, I know this isnt the most popular opinion here but I would just like if they implemented a keybind to enable/disable the feature, It might just be my playstyle tho, you cant be as agressive in some situations.

And you are selecting 3 second clips to try and mislead people?

I think im going to trust the people who are sending minutes long videos of themselves driving around a variety of city maps rather than your single tiny clip.

I was using your information yesterday to try out a variety of different vehicles and I very much agree that the Leopard has by FAR the worst driving model with regenerative steering.

It certainly does need some work, most other MBT’s were an absolute dream to drive and had no issues turning tightly.

I think instead of watching videos, you should test it out yourself to see how hard it is to maneuver in urban areas with the new mechanic.
