Regenerative Steering Feedback and Discussion

I counted seconds… On live server he did this trip in 99 seconds:
image

On devserver with automatic gearbox option - in 103 seconds.
On devserver with manual gearbox option… 80 SECONDS

Sounds like a cool skill-based addition, huh. If they will tune auto gear option a bit and fix some bugs, it may be perfect. Its like if you manually control your plane and know what to do - you can outperform a guy with mouse steering or something.

Manual gear video:

Shows that the biggest problem is automatic gearbox tuning.

Ahhh that’s good! Thank you for raising this.

Either have it as a toggle keybind or
W+A/D is turn with regenerative steering
A/D only is a hard turn

Then let wheeled vehicles turn on the spot as well.

Absolutely horrible addition as it currently stands and everyone that votes “happy” on this should feel bad

Uploaded a video of manual steering, can be done better, but anyway you can see that the main problem is automatic gearbox settings that do not lower the gear when player stops pressing W.

With manual you can just “choose” your turn radius. Maybe if gaijin will fix automatic gearbox it will be better.

Made a bug report for the driveability issues faced.

I also think that the problem at the moment is how the automatic transmission works and not the Regenerative Steering itself. These videos were made with Manual transmission

Once Gaijin adjusts the auto transmission logic, the gear ratios or even the turning radius for each gear it should work properly without having to use manual.

I have to say though that regenerative steering feels a lot smoother than the previous handling model even in it’s current state

I think the automatic is prevented from downshifting due to the bugs with regen steering, thats my theory anyway.

It looks like it briefly goes from 3rd gear up to 6th gear with small delay inbetween. As if 4th and 5th gears were not loading enough to even have a time to “wait til rpm goes beyond 2000”. As if the engine is too strong, or regenerative steering duplicates kinetic energy somehow.

Maybe its a problem with modern powerful tank. Maybe if they tested it with ww2 vehicles that had it - it would work better, idk.

This is another issue i think we have. It’s also highlighting the issues we have with too many gears, and no driveline inefficiencies.
Tanks that do 0-32km/h in 7-8s already do it in 4s in game.

honestly I like it so far, the only changes that need to be made are that track brakes should work with it (I suspect it not working currently is a bug that will be fixed). The only other issue is that Traction as a whole needs to fixed and has needed it for years after Gaijin decided to butcher it.

I think there should be a way to have both in the game at the same time and that you should be able to switch between the two modes on the fly - just like irl

How this could be achieved? Either like another user commented by having it be dependant on whether you hold w while turning or not
Or what I would have thought is that it could be similar to the “maneuver mode” in air battles where you can switch between either mode

This is not possible on most vehicles

I really like the regenerative steering, it really gives the sensation of having a tank with actual mass and inertia instead of doing crazy hot wheels shenanigans like with the current model. It would be nice to see it expanded to all the tanks that have it irl.

I also believe that making it an option that you can toggle is a bad idea because between the two steerings models, the old one clearly has the maneuverability advantage. (or make it toggleable only if a vehicle have both steering methods irl)

If regenerative steering ends up being a disadvantage (will depend on Gaijin’s final implementation) and you decide to use it anyway that is your choice. Not everyone needs to have that choice forced for them because of your desire to larp.

Making it a toggle is like a win win situation, because people that want the mechanic can get it implemented, the people who don’t want it but are fine with a toggle option would not voice against it.

I like it, I don’t think it should be a toggle, at least not in realistic/sim.

I do think automatic transmission mechanic needs work in general.

In that case case gunners sight should also be forced in realistic battles no?

Challenger 2 OES with double differential steering

Put this in \AppData\Local\WarThunderDev\content\pkg_local\gameData\units\tankModels
tank_rs.blk (182 Bytes)
You can edit the path in the file to the tank you want to try double differential in

tank_rs_edit

Example: …/units/tankmodels/jp_type_74_f.blk will change the tank to the Type 74F and give it double differential steering

Put this in your user missions folder

regen_test.blk (1.5 KB)

play the mission ingame from the user missions tab
