Current situation is kinda comedic.
A6 and A7M’s armed with 20mm Type 99 Mk2 are basically a death sentence to fight against. If they hit you once in a head-on, you’re dead. So they are forcing these head-ons like there’s no tomorrow.
Germans are dodging. Soviets are dodging 50/50, Briths are mostly dodging.
Japenese accept these and win.
If they land 1 shell - Corsair loses a wing.
If corsair lands several shells? Tough luck, RTB and repair.
It happens time and time again.
The damage on all 20mm with exception of MG151/20 is astounding.
Mg151/20 - I got hit 3 times with M-geschoss and once with some other 20mm shell, all in the wingtip, the wingtip stayed attached.
A WINGTIP.
Vs entire wing lost each time I get touched by Japanese 20mm.
EDIT: Used to be: heavily armored and armed planes push head-ons, everyone else dodges.
Nowadays: A6M5 and Spitfires happily push head-ons, as they are relatively small targets, while F4U4B or Fw 190 F8 lose more often than not as it takes longer for them to get out of the line of fire.
.50 cal armed planes are in a world of pain.
There’s more head-ons than ever since for anything armed with 20mm - at worst they will trade if they land 1-2 shells. And for a lot of players that’s ok.
Major Necro post here. But shall quickly summarise.
Real-Shatter was added but was totally broken for all aircraft except the 151 and FF/M s on aircraft like the FW190 which didnt get real-shatter applied to it (due to the minengeschoß rounds)
This resulted in “real-sh!tter” for any other aircraft that had 20mm guns, HE wasnt usable and instead you were better off running ground belts with mostly AP.
Real-Shatter was eventually fixed and HE rounds became viable to use again, which made most aircraft far more fun/playable.
But there was a lot of complaints from the German players because they no longer had the best guns and everyone else had either caught up or over-taken them if the 20mm were better (more guns, higher RoF, etc)
I dont know if real-shatter has been applied to the minengeschoß rounds yet.
It hasn’t. Which makes no sense since 30mm ADEN and DEFA cannons firing Mineshells do have realShatter.
Most likely Gaijin doesn’t want to change them to realShatter because they know that it would completey screw up their performance, making them outright worse than regular HE shells.
The issue is not that the 20mm Mineshells aren’t the most damaging 20mm explosive shells anymore. The issue is that realShatter damage was perfectly fine and realistic for a few weeks until Gaijin put the slider to max again.
Before realShatter did this extreme structural damage, I killed most planes due to destroyed engines, dead pilots or setting them on fire.
After that, simply hitting wings or the tail with 1-2 rounds was enough to kill them.
They achived that by simply cranking up the structural damage of shell fragments to max.
It’s not the explosive that turns a wing black, it’s the realShatter fragments, which makes no sense.
