The RAH-66 Cheyenne helicopter should be impervious to Radar due to the radar-absorbing paint and configuration of the helicopter. Within 1000 meters of the ground, radar shouldn’t be able to see this helicopter, especially when hovering behind a dense forest and the same goes for jet fighters shouldn’t be able to pick this helicopter up on the radar unless they are at very close vicinity of the helicopter. How about that! But we all know how this works, Right? Lol
You’re joking, right?
No, I am not joking that the helicopter has radar-absorbent paint, and the way it is made to reflect radar off the surface of the helicopter, you should do some research on it like I have! As intended, it would have functioned as a stealth helicopter, incorporating a number of different techniques and technologies in order to reduce its radar cross-section (RCS) along with other areas of visibility and detectability.[31] The exterior surfaces of the RAH-66 were faceted and covered with both radar-absorbent material (RAM) coatings and infrared-suppressant paint;[1] as a result of these combined measures, the Comanche’s RCS was stated to be 360 times smaller than that of the AH-64 Apache.[31] The acoustic signature of the helicopter was also reported to be noticeably lower than that of comparable helicopters; this reduction had been partially achieved through the adoption of an all-composite five-blade main rotor and pioneering canted[32] tail rotor assembly.
All helis are already invisible to radar if they are in the hover and should not be.
The RAH-66 would have a reduced RCS but it would not be invisible on radar. Especially given the giant spinning fan that any PD radar should detect with ease
Here’s one more: How can a FikakPz-1 Roland 2 fire a missile through a mountain and take down a helicopter and here’s some pictures to prove it you can even see where the missile hits the ground
Yeah so a few things, as far as I understand it, yeah we all think of the RAH-66 as a stealth helicopter, but really its low observability. The main thing with it was yes, it had a reduced RCS, but its still a helicopter with a giant PD radar reflector spinning on top of it. The main boon it had going for it was its reduced audio signature and low IR output.
But I’ll agree, being hard locked through a km of forest and shot at, with missiles and bullets flying through said forest and trees can be very frustrating. Especially at top tier now with the new AA systems, on maps like Poland or Hurtgen forest (lmao) that are very flat, you can’t rely on tree cover to protect you from AA all the time.
And as for the Roland, probably replay issue, maybe check the server replay? AFAIK, aren’t the Roland 2s also optically guided? If they know where you’re hovering they can just lob the missile over the hill and get the proxy kill on you. Have had it happen to me quite a few times.
You saw where the Missile Hit the far side of the mountain it did not even come close to my RAH-66 Cheyenne
Is that your replay or the server replay? Replays can be whacky like that
- Cheyenne was the AH-56, RAH-66 is Commanche
- Stealth =/= Invisible
- Ground rendering at range can be really weird, hills/mountains can render lower at long ranges, though I can’t say if that’s what happened
edit: the Roland was a console player, he was probably using that trick
Tell me you dont play Heli’s without telling me you dont play Heli’s…
server replay
But as you can see, the Missile hit the Far Side of the Mountain in the Pic, so how did it take down my Chopper?
It didn’t hit the mountain, it flew over it and you were hovering just high enough for the missile to proximity fuse
looks like my 2nd guess might be correct, the way he snapped to you immediately through a building after spawning: console cheese.
It was to be the Comanche… Not Cheyenne.
The Cheyenne was the YAH-56.
And the Comanche was never going to be “impervious” to radar. There’s no such thing in the first place. It was going to have a drastically reduced radar cross-section as far as helicopters go. But not “impervious” to or invisible.
TBF, one of the main developments of the Commanche was the rotor material itself, being strong enough to do its job while being a radar transparent composite.
I wonder if any of that experience went into new rotors for other helicopters such as the AH-64E
It definitely went in to Special Operations Blackhawk variants…
Oh no how sad the premuim helicopter isn’t broken in every way possible. biggest tragedy in war thunder yet
Yeah I really hate how that’s a thing, especially as I fly with rocket helis primarily, I’ll be flying between and behind buildings outside of audible range and people just know precisely where to lob their proxy rounds or missiles. But I get it, aiming on console can be hard gotta keep things balanced somehow.
Yeah, the massive spinning blade doesn’t give off any radar signals of course.
WE the people replying to this thread know about Stealth, I’m not so sure you do…
