I’ve seen a bit of talk about adding PD returns to helicopters rotor blades and I feel that this needs to be mentioned as well. Lots of radar AA are able to lock, track, and fire through trees. Makes some maps very difficult to play, as there is lots of tree cover technically, but it doesn’t actually mask you. I imagine this will be even worse when helis get their PD changes,
The larger signal wavelength means objects like trees will attenuate the signal but not completely block it straight away
Bit out of my depth here, but wouldn’t the high frequency FCS radars that guide weapons have much shorter wavelengths, like on the order of centimeters? Or am I completely wrong on that
Just make the warheads the same as HEAT-FS…any blade of grass, leaf or branch will set it off.
Yes, longer wavelengths will penetrate foliage the best, J-band tracking radar is starting to really interact with the foliage, MMW’s will have a lot of trouble.
But again, its not a hard block its weakening the signal. Enough tree’s to pass through will weaken it too much to use, but at those close combat ranges tracking radar’s can still track pretty well
Max tracking range of the OSA is 25km, so even a 50% loss in power isn’t catastrophic at 2km engagement range
SAM’s don’t typically have graze fuzes like HEAT shells
Rotors not being modeled needs to be fixed so it’s impossible to defeat active radar missiles by standing still.
