Radar and ground air missiles or air to ground

Question? Who thinks missiles, air-to-ground or ground-to-air, can pass through trees on a mountain, and who thinks radar can distinguish a helicopter down below a ridgeline or a timberline without getting multiple returns from the trees

i mean its actually easier to do irl than in warthunder, gaijin doesnt model correct radar return from the rotor

Then how do I always get shot down when I’m hovering behind a Ridge and a tree line with tall trees, and missiles come through the timber, and they don’t blow up? Explain that I know how radar works, and I know missiles can’t fly through timber, nor do they tend to blow up when they hit a tree limb

i believe the only part of the tree that is solid is the trunk, so radar is only really obscured by trunks and missiles cannot hit any other part of the tree

There is also a large number of trees that are purely cosmetic, they do not actually exist as an object. you can fly straight through them.

Don’t you think they should fix this so it doesn’t happen in the game? It can’t happen in realistic battle events. Why does it have to occur in realistic gameplay? You know they did advertise this game as the most realistic simulator armor game, and it should be; it’s just the point I’m trying to make, you know it’s just like the trees are getting knocked down or shot down or whatever disappear into the ground when they should just lay on the ground as they do in a game that I can’t mention if I do this post will be froze

Here’s a good one for ya, I’m hovering just above the ground, and radar can pick me up through a mountain next to a castle, and I get shot down radar should not be able to see me, but it did in this game. This is what’s wrong with the radar; they need to fix this here’s some pics and then the missile doesn’t blow up when it hits my chopper, it disappears as you can see in the very last picture.

you realise your rotors are above the edge of the mountain right?, they may not have the super strong radar section that they should but they do still give a radar return

and thats being generous, you really dont seem as hidden as you think

I can tell you don’t know much about radar. It’s not the rotors that the radars pick up; radar shoots a signal out, and it bounces back off the fuselage of the aircraft back to the receiver. It’s almost like sonar, but there’s no ping and if radar were that good, it would pick up our stealth bombers and our stealth fighter aircraft, which it doesn’t, and when my radar alarm went off, I went down to about 5 feet above the ground, and it couldn’t see my helicopter on its radar but he was able to launch his missile as you can see in the 3rd photo I was 5 feet above the ground

do you understand how radars work? helicopter rotors provide a pretty consistent medium strength radar return (not modelled in warthunder)

radar can pick up stealth aircraft, just at much reduced range, stealth aircraft arent literally radar invisible

by which point the missile had very likely been fired and lofted, at which point it doesnt matter if the missile can still see you, it has inertial guidance and you barely moved at all so it can still go after you

you were never lower than 14ft off the ground until you died

Oh i’m glad you think so, and how do you know how many feet I was above the Ground? And are B2 bombers and F-22- F35’s that flew into Iran, and they couldn’t see them on radar, they didn’t know they were there until the bombs fell. so you tell me how that is possible, bud!

you sent the screenshots bro

i put a big red circle around it just for you

yes because you cant put a radar literally everywhere

here this is a map that kinda shows a similar principle, this one is of altitude but the same idea hold true for reduced radar cross section aircraft, just pretend that the top half is for normal planes and the bottom half is for stealth aircraft

Spoiler

most radars are doppler now our days

Rotor, while having a small RCS, gives a strong return since it moves relative to the helicopter, even when it’s hovering.

At your typical helicopter engagement range, a radar will pick it up

That being said, rotor return isn’t modelled in game, and together with multipath, it makes heli overperform by a quite large margin currently.

As for your screenshot, you were not hidden at all (we can see you have LOS to some SPAAs, so they have LOS to you), and if i’m not mistaken, that missile is a 9X (IR). So if you arrived unhidden and not hovering, CLAWS radar picked you up, fired and by the time you were hovering, the 9X was already IR-locked on you. At that point, multipath can not save you since it’s an IR missile

You got hit by a heat seeking missile

It saw your thermal signature, or CLAWS saw you for a split second on radar and slung it at you. Guided by GPS it saw you from above the hill.

In the one screen shot he posted, it says it was.

99% chance this was the case.

You just need that first ping to get a general area to fire.

To fire them on any aircraft, you have to have a lock on the radar on the CLAWS AA otherwise you cannot fire the misslle

You just need a ping.

The missiles have DL and IoG as well as their own way of locking a target.
