Uhh, ok? R60MKs still have more practical use cases than Aim-9Ls. The likelihood of som1 spotting and flaring an Aim-9 is much higher than for R60
Not really.
Yes really. Aim-9s have longer burn and longer travel time. This makes them easier to spot. Now in the specific case of really slow attackers (namely A-10 and Su-25), an Aim-9L is definitely better, but on any other plane, R60MK is superior.
Not really, the situations where aim9s are predominately used are in ambush scenarios where the longer range is what keeps the target from noticing the missile before its too late. R-60Ms are strictly worse.
Ambushing is just as effective with R-60
Incorrect.
Nope
R60 is just too short ranged, you have to fire it from close up, and if your plane is close to the guy, he’s way more likely to see or even hear you. The R-60M may have some advantage killing unaware people in a very close range furball, since its fast off the rail, but that’s a gamble anyway (people will usually just randomly spam flares if they’re turning around in a furball) and its not a place you really want to be in AirRB anyway, especially with most planes that actually carry R-60Ms, so it’s kind of a dubious advantage IMO.
The later sidewinders are pretty good up close anyway, and what’s more you can actually kill a flaring opponent with them if you are close enough and they keep afterburning, which I’m pretty sure will not happen with a R-60M even at like 400m. And they also have the long range to be really effective at firing into people’s blindspots (usually right above), which the R-60M can’t really do because it loses energy way too fast.
Aim-9s tend to be alot more flare hungry than R-60s (or maybe that’s just cuz Russia planes are a lot colder than they should be) and Aim-9s can’t get away with nearly the same stuff that R-60s can when it comes to close range.
No way. AIM-9B and E maybe, but even the AIM-9D has a chance to ignore flares at the right angle on a close range afterburning target. R-60s are more missile hungry too I’m pretty sure, basically any heat source is going to drag them away.
It’s a different issue, but the massive Seeker FOV makes them extra susceptible to preflaring, teammates, and other missiles as well. The big saving grace for them IMO is that the planes that can take them usually can take a lot of them.
Nah r 60m is lots more flare hungry. The advantage is that they can be used lots of situations
