Questions from beginner

So im kinda new player with some questions. Of somebody helps i will appreciate.

  1. Im playing panther and vk and i feel like im kinda weak. Not about the gun that gun is a monster but i feel like im kinda weak about survivability. Turret is getting penned always. Theres a huge fucking cupola. And hull frontal plate id getting penned from special tanks like pt76. So is there a tank which has good survivability with decent or good gun?
  2. Im having kinda hard time about looking out for enemies. Yes i try to use binoculars but they peek behind the hills or buildings and i cant see them or counter them. Or they hulldown with 1 pixel gun shooting behind a hill. So how can spot enemies easily?
3)Repair time is so much. If i got shot to my gun its disabled for 40 second. How TF am i supposed to do in fights? If i move i cant shoot if i try to repair i cant move and they flank so how can i avoid that 40 SEC repair situation.
  3. Is stalinium real? Sometimes i shoot a soviet tank and got non pen with 192 mm Pen. But when i get back to hangar and try the same situation i kill it. So how does that happen.
  4. How to get gud
  1. IMHO, the Panther family actually has quite decent survivability. The turret weak spots can be protected by staying long range and swaying the turret while reloading, and HEAT slingers like the PT-76 have awful post-pen. But to answer your question, I think only some heavy tanks and late MBTs barely fit your bill, and even they are far from invincible, especially in uptiers. The current meta is heavily biased against armour and towards mobility, so it would be good to learn to use light and medium tanks (especially since you’ll be running into the long stretch of mid-tier tanks with basically no armour).
  2. Most straightforward solution would be to use a bigger screen (though not too big; a wall projector would be silly). Also remember to watch the minimap (a skill that most players unfortunately don’t seem to possess). You will see markers placed by teammates that may indicate enemies, hit indications on enemies that briefly display their location, and of course scouting markers. They provide valuable intel, use it! If you really hate not seeing your enemies, try playing Arcade.
  3. Only way is to upgrade your crew skills. Also try using some silver lions to get the Expert qualification on frequently used vehicles, and if you don’t mind spending golden eagles or grinding the same vehicle for months, you can get the Ace qualification. These boost the crew skill a lot.
  4. Sort of, but it technically can happen to any tank. Most often it’s caused by volumetric, where the shell hits a weirdly shaped piece of armour and faces an absurd thickness equivalent. Or sometimes it’s a bug; maybe the tanks was modelled incorrectly, maybe the server gave up on you at that instant, we’ll never know. It’s most well known on Soviet tanks, but other known culprits include Tiger I side skirts and the gun shield of some British tanks.
  5. Play more. That’s really the only way. War Thunder has a ludicrously steep learning curve, and very few are able to get around it.

Yes i like panther family but i cant shoot from long ranges. I like to play close combat not sniping from moon or waiting 5 minutes to shoot 1 target. Close combats seem more fun so any ways to play panther like a close combat or theres another line for it ?

don’t rely on your armor. There are some tanks in the german tech that can do it like Tiger 1 and 2, but if you get too much used to it, you will have a very bad time as soon as you reach rank V. German tanks don’t have any armor anymore at this BR, every hit you take most likey will kill you directly.

It more about see the enemy while being unseen by them. Hide behind hill tops and look with your commander goggles over it. If you see a target, peak over it, Make your shot and reverse back into cover.
And try to flank the enemies for the side. Don’t go straight for the capute points. The Panther is pretty fast for a medium tank, so I would recommand to use this advantage and get in a sniper position fast. Maybe stick to the edge of the map if possible.

And patience is also important. Wait a few minutes in your spot and wait for a target to get in your line of sight.

Later panthers will have better turret rotation speed. I do suggest tho to try not to be seen. Who can shoot first will probaly win the engagement. If you flank at the edge of the map, you can limit the directions where the enemy could come, but this way you might leave out some action.
Also I personally grind out the tanks I stuggle to kill, so I get to know their weaknesses, but thats only works If you are fine with playing ww2 only, because with this method you are not going to see anything else…

I wont going to grind out ww2 so i dont care about top tier tanks. And yes i try it but how can i see enemies behind cover too? I mean if i can do it enemies can do it too so isnt it requires a bit luck?

I personally prefer using Tigers in close combat. Panthers (especially the early Panthers) aren’t the best choice in CQC, but they can work. Try sticking to long, narrow roads or the edge of the map to keep your frontal armour facing the enemy, and make sure you have allies to cover your sides.

Is there a tank can fight in close combat? Not sniping. Okay panther family is sniper but i wasnt expecting it. I expected a close combat fighter because its mobility and sloped thick armor. So any tanks that handles close combat easily

By the way do you use headphones?

I myself don’t yet own the Panther, but there are some things I can confidently say from facing it or from other tanks with similar features.
Its slow turret rotation really hinderes CQC combat as you can’t respond to an enemy crossing paths with you very quickly, contrasting tanks like the Sherman which has fast turret rotation and a vertical stabilizer.

The Panther’s turret armor is only 100mm thick, though it’s a complete bugged out volumetric mess so a cannon with 150mm pen has about the same chance as penning it as does a cannon with 280mm pen. Whether a shell will pen the turret or not often feels completely up to random chance so it’s not the best idea to rely on it. Most tanks can pen your turret though and know to aim for it so risking attempting to push am assault like a heavy tank isn’t the greatest idea.

It’s worth noting, that most all tanks you’ face with have enough pen to get through your turret cheeks and cupola, the M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo only gets 100mm of pen for its APHE, and 140mm pen iirc for its APCR. Because of APCR’s low post-pen damage it’s not reliable for dealing critical damage through Panther’s turret so most people will just try to destroy your cannon barrel then destroy you from your thin side armor. You can counter this by wiggling your tank back and forth making it very hard to hit your barrel.

There is a good chance they know the map, and know where players are likely to go, so they are specifically looking for players there.

Upgrade your crew skills, they make such a difference. Also expert your crews for tanks you use often.

It isn’t, WT is just inconsistent sometimes. Certain tanks have very trolly turrets that can cause that.

Well, you’re right until you’re not with all that…

  1. The turret traverse on most panthers are actually decent enough for CQC… The D and the VK is the only ones that don’t really have the turret traverse for it… But you’re also not wrong about the Sherman being better at CQC. Especially ones with 75’s and that 5 second reload.

  2. You’re absolutely right about the turret face and mantlet. It’s very goofy, but can be penned more reliably with high pen solid shot. I just try and aim for turret cheeks or try and flank. Also for that part about the cupola, is really only applicable to the D. The A and G fix it pretty well and the F just doesn’t have one… But you’re right about the rest of that armor stuff :)

So i shouldnt engage in close combat. But in city maps like berlin(im not sure) and that winter city map how can i snipe. Thats the part i dont get it. I dont like waiting 5 min to get a kill or i dont like sniping little pixels from windows or smth BUT when i engage in close combat i get penned from my turret and gun so i cant shoot either. WTF am i supposed to do

Yes i upgraded my crew ground repair but it is still too much. Like what can i do in middle of battle with 30-40sec repair???

Nothing. At least you dont have to go back to a factory in the hinterland where they can properly repair you. Also you can beg for your teammates, if they help the repair time halves.

“Realistic” utter bullshit

248 battles and play Panther?

That’s your problem - you do not have enough experience. go back down the BR’s and work your way up slowly rather than just bull-rushing straight to your preferred vehicle.

That really isn’t needed, it’s still a lower BR.
