You don’t even need gunner or bino view - you do need to make sure the aircraft is visible when you finish pressing the call though (this is applicable for GAB/RB)
Ally planes that are close to the battlefield are also always shown on the minimap. either with the circle moving across the map when they are directly over the ao or the pointer on the map edges. If you hear a plane and you cant identify it, you are sure it is only one, and there is a plane marker on the minimap then that plane is ally. If there is no marker and it is close then it is enemy, given there is only one plane. That at least helps in low tiers with close aircraft. if they are further youve got time to use the air alert method.
for ground yes, close planes you see on the minimap if they are friendly. So usually, if you hear a plane, check minimap → marker? yes → plane ally, unless theres multiple, then number of ally planes as shown on map, others are enemy.
Hear one plane–> check markers–> none–> plane is enemy
But a doublecheck with air alert or id never hurts (unless you need to decide very quickly ofc then it could hurt)
oh i just realized, you are probably talking about id from air to air. i was thinking plane id when youre on the ground (possibly playin aa). mb. Im only familiar with the method i described when being on the ground
