History.
Born in the province of Piacenza on Oct. 4, 1920, Luigi Scapuzzi became an elementary school teacher and then a clerk at the Tax Office until 1941, when he was called to arms by the Royal Italian Army. Scapuzzi attended the officer specialization course and was assigned to the armored units of the 3rd Tank Infantry Regiment in Bologna. Soon promoted to second lieutenant, he was sent to the 4th Battalion self-propelled 47/32 and remained on active duty until 1942. Later he was, at his explicit request, transferred to the front-line units in Sicily, and in April 1943 he was transferred to CCXXXIII Battalion 47/32 self-propelled counter-tankers under the command of the 4th Infantry Division βLivorno.β After a clash near San Michele di Ganzaria that occurred shortly after the American landing at a nearby sea location he was promoted to the rank of battalion commander. After a counteroffensive by German forces against Canadian units, his unit was assigned the task of defending the retreating German armored units. During the attack by the preponderant Anglo-American forces, Commander Scapuzzi ran out of ammunition in his self-propelled unit and found himself fighting with his automatic weapon until he was shot dead in the chest.
